Message from Christine De La Rosa -
Hello,
It is with a deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of the Bay Area's legendary women. Chantal Salkey passed away last week. Chantal, one of the first women of color and female promoters in the Bay Area, produced famous clubs for lesbians such as RAW, Club RED, Backstreet and currently MANGO. Even if you didn't know her personally you probably knew her club. She will be greatly missed, not only by family and friends, but by the greater community which she served.

Chantal's commitment to bringing the best and most diverse music, DJs and people into her clubs, made her a visionary during her time here. She almost single-handedly introduced Hip Hop to the Lesbian club scene. She was responsible in helping some of the leading Bay Area DJs breakout in their careers. She created the first T-Dance for women in the Bay Area. She had a strong commitment for creating spaces where everyone was welcome. She was a powerhouse that preferred to stay in the background of her events while letting her staff, DJs and most importantly her patrons SHINE.

On a personal note, when I arrived in the Bay Area a short year and a half ago I was very fortunate to be introduced to Chantal. We talked about my plans in the Bay Area and how I was so excited by all the possibilities that were here. One day she called and invited me to lunch. She sat me down and she shared with me her vision, her mission, her experiences. She gave me guidance, advice and her own personal philosophy. For those words of wisdom I am forever grateful.

Chantal's vision, her person, her pioneering spirit will be missed by her friends, her family, her extended family, the people she worked with, her community and every person that was somehow touched by her.

Christine aka Miz Chris
