Please come to the first class for $10-$20 to try it out and decide if you'd like to join us! Course description: This is a community class intended for self-identified queer, transgender, bisexual, two-spirit, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, gay, and lesbian people* who want to develop a fuller range of their voice for speaking and/or singing. People with all levels of vocal experience (or lack thereof) are welcome and encouraged to join us! The class will culminate in an optional performance of texts and songs. Glitter will also be optional but highly encouraged. In this class, Wendy Vastine will primarily combine two physical vocal techniques - the Linklater technique and the Roy Hart/Alfred Wolfsohn approach – and Eli Conley will provide basis in more classical and traditional singing techniques. The Linklater technique of 'Freeing the Natural Voice,' involves learning to relax most of the body's muscles while activating others intentionally. Linklater holds that through socialization and the trials of everyday life, our muscles have learned to hold tension that blocks an easy, full voice. The technique works with activating and learning how to use the full body. The Roy Hart/Alfred Wolfsohn approach to voice is grounded in the idea that anybody can sing, but everyone has a different path into their voice. It is an extremely individual approach, so there is no one lesson that is the same. It also involves training the body to relax, and to access the voice from different parts of the body. Eli's singing technique draws from his classical, jazz and folk singing background. We will focus on bringing out the joy in singing no matter what your experience (or fears), learning how to find your core sound, singing in tune with confidence throughout your voice's whole range. *We are creating this space intentionally for lgbtq communities because we know that lgbtq folks like ourselves all too often find learning & creative spaces lacking relevance to our lives and awareness of our needs. If you have any questions about whether the class is right for you, please don't hesitate to contact us at voiceandglitter@gmail.com Teacher Bios: Eli Conley is a white gay transgender man who grew up singing in the renowned Greater Richmond Children's Choir in central Virginia. He has trained in jazz singing at Berklee College of Music in Boston and classical vocal performance at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. Currently, Eli sings tenor with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and performs as an indie folk singer/songwriter ( myspace.com/eliconley ). He has a special interest in working with students through the vocal changes brought on by testosterone. Wendy Vastine is a queer femme who became fascinated with the voice as a transformative vehicle, as part of her physical theater training at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theatre Wing. Since moving to San Francisco, she has performed with We Players' site specific performances of Shakespeares's, The Tempest, and Macbeth. She has also written and performed many shorter, solo socio-political comedic pieces. These days Wendy is most often found using her voice training to create different sounds on her clarinet with the Brass Liberation Orchestra. She is particularly interested in using the arts as a tool for healing and sustainability in community activism.
