Homonomixxx presents Vive Haiti! A benefit dinner and dance club night

Wednesday November 23rd 8 pm dinner, 10 pm dance party

The Verdi Club | 2424 Mariposa Street, San Francisco, CA 94110

Please join us next Wednesday for dinner and dancing to secure a new location for the Jakmel Ekpresyon Community Art Center in Jakmel, Haiti and to raise funds for Ivy McClelland's Ghetto Biennale project in December. We are trying to raise $30,000 to cover next year's costs. This benefit is one of many happening across the country.Jakmel Ekpresyon, JE, is an organization that provides access to often marginalized communities based on their gender, sexuality and disability for local residents and working artists in order to build their creative practices. The Center is home to sculptors, actors, dancers, filmmakers, and painters, and encourages collaboration between local and international artists through workshops, seminars, and artistic activities.

The Center's current location is not handicapped accessible and lacks secure storage facilities for the new computer lab. In the new location, the lab will enable video and film making artists to make work, as well as act as a cyber-cafe for local residents who do not have affordable access to the internet.

The Homonomixxx solidarity event will offer a 4 course Caribbean inspired meal that is organic, vegan and gluten free. Food by the fabulous Tessa Maria with dinner music by Glimmer and a slide show by Jakmel Ekspresyon members.

Important update for the benefit dinner:
We are going to start the dinner sliding scale at $15 to $50 to make it more accessible.
So please come out and enjoy a great meal with friends!

Founded as a collaboration between Haitian and American artists after the earthquake, JE's mission is to provide a platform for self-expression and dialogue for Jakmel artists. "The prospect for emerging Haitian artists to learn new skills and have the opportunity to showcase their work helps to build a hopeful future," Frame said. The skills presented in workshops are often skills that can help Haitian artists in the job market. Through JE support, five artists recently secured jobs teaching improvisational theater. JE anticipates the projected computer lab will also provide valuable skills to Jakmel artists in order to obtain employment.

JE has partnered with the Frame Family Foundation in their fundraising efforts. For more information, contact Sue Frame at 773-678-4787
