Save the Eagle: Rally and Funeral for Queer Spaces

http://www.facebook.com/events/361339247269684/

GATHER NOW TO SAVE THE EAGLE TAVERN!
Yes, it's not too late, but some shady shit is going down! Please read the update below to find out details!

We will gather at Foreign Cinema, 2534 Mission @ noon to rally against the loss of queer space in San Francisco. One of their owners is involved with taking away the Eagle from a group of queer business owners just before the contract was signed! We're not going to let them get away with it.

Think New Orleans style jazz funeral. Dress fabulously and let that queer spirit flame freely. TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

IMPORTANT EAGLE TAVERN UPDATE: A valiant team of queer business owners have been trying hard to reopen the Eagle over the last year. After many months of hard work, they got the landlord to agree to a contract, signed it and sent it to him to sign. They didn't hear back from him for weeks.

The landlord deliberately dropped the potential gay business owners in order to pursue business with five straight guys. This is the third or fourth time that the landlord has purposefully dicked around with gay business owners. Could this be a pattern of homophobia?

These five straight dudes want to open up a high-end restaurant where our beloved Eagle used to be. One of them is a part owner of "Foreign Cinema" the $20+ per plate restaurant that lies at the heart of gentrified mission. These straight guys insist that they can support our gay community just as well as any gay owner. That's bullshit.

Now, the landlord who has refused to let a gay business owner come back to the Eagle is trying to slam through a liquor license transfer to the space. They're hired well connected consultants to get it through lightning fast - the City Operations Committee that first supported it spent a whopping 7 minutes for the entire meeting.

IT'S TIME TO GET FIRED UP! The property owner and business owners involved think that they can just turn their back on the lgbt community and not have any repercussions. Let's show them that the queer community of San Francisco is still powerful! We will not fade quietly as space after space is taken away from us! The Eagle was more than just a tavern - it was our community center and we're going to fight to keep her alive!

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
- Write a letter to your City Supervisor! Go to sfbos.org and find your district. All the city supervisor e-mails are easily available. Write a letter expressing how important the Eagle was to our community and how upset you are that the landlord has shut out queer business owners
- Come to our Sunday Funeral for Queer Space! This Sunday (7/22) Noon @ Foreign Cinema, we're going to gather to show the power of our queer community and let the owners of Foreign Cinema know how upset we are. Think New Orleans style jazz funeral for all the queer spaces we have lost in the last decade.
- Spread the word! We need to get news of this story far and wide QUICK! We only have two weeks to organize and stop this liquor license transfer. Then we need to convince the landlord that the only profitable business we will let him run in the old Eagle is the Eagle itself. We can only do this if we have the community organized! So please, TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

More updates coming soon. Please check back often. E-mail me at kyle.devries@gmail.com if you'd like to volunteer your time to save the Eagle.

I hope to be sharing a beer with you in the Eagle's patio some time soon!
