Celebrating local writers with special guest appearences by the authors each month. Discussions led by Oscar Raymundo.
Book Club meets at 7:30pm at Magnet, 4122 18th Street @ Castro.

We The Animals, Justin Torres's sparse debut novel, is brimming with delicate stories of family, of growing up, of facing reality, and of delaying it. Narrated by the youngest son of a Puerto Rican father and white mother from Brooklyn raising their three young sons in upstate New York, the novel is comprised of vignettes detailing moments spent in the eye of the ferocious bubble of home.

Reminder: LGBT Meditation and Mindfulness Group at The Wellness Center @ Sun Jan 29 6:30pm - 7:30pm (Queer Things)

LGBT Meditation and Mindfulness Group at The Wellness Center

For the LGBT Community in the San Francisco Bay Area, I hope you'll join us for Mediation and Mindfulness Classes. For those outside of this area, I will try to provide links to other sources of information and practice.

Focused on the LGBT Community, these Meditation and Mindfulness classes are intended for people who are living and working in today's active and chaotic world.
They're for people who seek to find more peace within themselves and integrate that peace into their everyday lives. Practitioners that attend range from absolute beginners to those who have been incorporating a meditative spiritual practice into their daily lives for years.
Anyone can practice and benefit from meditation: students, people taking care of children, those working 8-to-6 in corporate America, activists, non-activists, vegetarians, military and law enforcement and anyone who has been interested in or curious about meditation but who never seem to have found the time to learn about it.

What to expect: The class will consist of a brief explanation of meditation, the review and practice of a specific technique and discussion about mindfulness and mysticism. New topics will be discussed each week. Chairs will be provided. Please dress comfortably.
Michael has practiced the disciplines of meditation and mindfulness for over 18 years. He teaches by incorporating the profound wisdom from a variety of traditions including Zen, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Tantric Mysticism. This path is structured for those who live and work in the world.
What to Bring: A desire for greater happiness in your life, a willing heart and an open hand. (A sense of humor is also recommended.)
There is no charge for the classes.

Dates: Wednesday's in January and February from 7 to 8pm at The Center

Also Sundays from 6:30 to 7:30pm at The Wellness Center at 264 Dolores St. b/w 15th and 16th.

C U L T L I F E
2012//LOCKDOWN

-Livid Cult Burlesque Theatre is a living creature of sight, sound, and electric body magic.
-California's only Black-owned, Queer Burlesque Theatre Consortium.
Conceived by Burlesque artist, art history enthusiast, and pop culture creature Dorian Faust, Livid Cult Burlesque Theatre is a cutting-edge Neo-Burlesque experience that combines the sensual spectacle of Burlesque performance with the technicality of stage plays and musicals. The show itself uses a more holistic approach to the art of the tease by revealing the history of it through film, dialogue, acting, and dance. Livid Cult changes the audience's perception of Burlesque today by dissecting the components of a Burlesque show, turning each piece inside out, embellishing it, and propelling it to new heights.

Reminder: Gay Shame Meeting @ Sat Jan 28 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)

Gay Shame Meeting

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome.

Gay Shame was meeting Saturdays at Modern Times on Valencia, but the store has moved to 24th Street but info about new location for Gay Shame meetings isn't up yet. So check http://gayshamesf.org

San Francisco Walking Dykes meet in Golden Gate Park

The San Francisco Walking Dykes is a weekly walking group that meets "rain or shine" every Saturday at 11AM in front of the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. The purpose of the group is to build community for lesbians and queer-identified women in the San Francisco/Bay Area while promoting health and wellness. Walks vary in length and destination from week to week. Most of the women are over 40, but all lesbians and queer women are welcome to join. Dogs on leashes are welcome too. Groups vary in size from 5 – 25 depending upon the weather. The organizer is there each week with few exceptions. For more information, or to be added to the email distribution list, contact Michelle Hughes (Organizer) at mhughes56@comcast.net. You can also join the group on "Meetup" at: http://www.meetup.com/The-San-Francisco-Walking-Dykes/

Reminder: Wilde Chats at Sweet Inspirations @ Sat Jan 28 10:30am - 11:30am (Queer Things)

Wilde Chats at Sweet Inspirations

Haven't had a really good meaningful conversation lately? Then come and explore Wilde Chats, one of The Community Initiative's most popular activities. Meeting at a variety of San Francisco's distinctive neighborhood cafes, a large diverse group of gay men explores topics and issues that are important to us as gay men. A great way to make new friends on a level that doesn't usually happen in bars or clubs.

Wilde Chats is a loosely structured community-driven group get together every Saturday morning to discuss specific issues affecting us as gay men and our gay community. The group is lead following a "Socratic" model; rather than talk about solutions and answers to problems, the idea is to expand on the days topic by analyzing it and breaking it up into other questions. The discussions typically focus on the hidden/unspoken assumptions, generalities and concepts that we as gay men make, and the differences that our various points of reference imply. Wilde Chats are currently taking place at the times and locations listed below.

Wilde Chats meets 10:30AM - 12:00PM Saturdays at Sweet Inspirations, 2239 Market Street between Sanchez and Noe.
