The San Francisco Zine Fest is a free, annual celebration of small-press publishing from zines and comics to art books and beyond from 11 am to 5 pm on August 31 and September 1, 2013.

Over the two-day festival at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, over 140 small-press and DIY creators will be selling, trading, and otherwise sharing their work. There are tons of free workshops and panels and, as always, the show is free to attend.

11 am to 2 pm
Perennial Postcard Project - Join the SF Correspondence Co-op onstage at their mail art "creation station." SFZF attendees are welcome to drop by and add to the open-ended postcard project taking place between 11 am and 2 pm on the Main Stage in Room B. Then head over to the Red Letter Day table and peruse zines related to mail art, letter writing, and postal goodies.

Justin Hall Spotlight - This SFZF Special Guest Q&A features Justin Hall, mastermind behind the award winning anthology No Straight Lines. Justin has created travel comics, erotic comics, and fiction for the past decade. His ability to dive into different types of stories shows his curiosity and engagement with the world around him. He is just as much about creating art as he is about community. His multifaceted work, and his knowledge of history and culture, have made him a valued teacher, an engaging speaker, and a precious resource. Here is your opportunity to speak to him about the ever-changing landscape of comics and its relation to queer and mainstream culture.

Send Us Your Sick & Twisted: Community Cataloging Sexually Diverse Zines at the CSC - A panel discussion on the advocacy to preserve and present deviant zines at The Center for Sex and Culture while engaging the community. Presented by: Anissa Malady, MLIS, Resident Librarian at CSC; Tess McCarthy, MLIS, Resident Archivist at CSC and, Ian Callahan, Community Cataloger.*This event is for attendees 18+

Marketing for Artists - If you think artists have to starve (or sell out) to get their work noticed, think again. Learn some marketing fundamentals from artrepreneur and former gallery owner Rick Kitagawa in this 1-hour primer on the basics of monetizing your art. In this whirlwind primer, you'll walk away with a new way of thinking about marketing, the basics of social media, the non-sleazy way to network, and quick low-to-no cost ways of promoting your work.

Youth and Zines: A Workshop for Young Artists and Their Allies - This workshop begins with a few samples of zines created by teens and a brief overview of zine history. It is followed by a zine-making project, where you get to create your own book. Learn about the zines that have been put together by teens and youth programs. See the purpose, the drive, and the positive changes that happen when young people share their stories. Though this workshop focuses on work by young artists, people of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Noon to 2 pm
Exquisite Corpse - Take part in the first ever SFZF Exquisite Corpse Project. Borrowing from the Surrealist styles of times past, theywill provide art supplies and an oversized canvas for all attendees to leave their mark on, resulting in a one-of-a-kind collage of creativity and craftsmanship. This event will take place on the Main Stage in Room B, so make sure to stop by and show your stuff.

Roman Muradov Spotlight - This SFZF Special Guest Spotlight highlights the work of illustrator and cartoonist Roman Muradov. Roman's illustration work has appeared in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal among others. His first graphic novel, (In a Sense) Lost & Found comes out this fall from Nobrow Press. Roman will be present to speak about his work and process. Moderated by writer and filmmaker Channing Kennedy.

Digital DIY: Creating Art with the Help of Social Media and Crowdfunding - SF local Doctor Popular discusses using social media sites like Instagram and Twitter to collaborate with fans, as well as providing a closer look at his experience and suggestions for crowdfunding your art. His newest photo zine, American Analog, was successfully funded with help from Kickstarter.

Sophia Foster-Dimino Spotlight - This SFZF Special Guest Spotlight highlights the work of illustrator, Google Doodler, zine-maker and animator Sophia Foster-Dimino. Sophia's first long-form comic will be published by Retrofit this fall. Sophia will be present to speak about her work and process. Moderated by writer and filmmaker Channing Kennedy.

Zinesters Assemble: Pages Are Just the Beginning - Local bookartist Bettina Pauly brings her zine-making savvy to SFZF. Armed with a variety of techniques for creating easy (yet unusual) book/zine structures, this is the perfect workshop to get you motivated about a current project or inspired to start a new one. Class space is limited to 15 people; seating is on a first come/ first serve basis. All materials are provided, but be sure to arrive early.
