Reminder: Cockettes revival: Pearls Over Shanghai at the Hypnodrome @ Sat Oct 31 8pm – 9pm (Queer Things)
Cockettes revival: Pearls Over Shanghai at the HypnodromeThrillpeddlers Proudly Presents "Pearls Over Shanghai": A Revival of the Cockettes' 1970 Musical Extravaganza. Thrillpeddlers is proud to announce the second production of their 2009 season, "Pearls Over Shanghai," an original musical by Link Martin and Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn. This show is the centerpiece of our second annual Theatre of the Ridiculous Revival, and will mark the 40th anniversary of the formation of The Cockettes, a gender-bending theatrical troupe who not only originated this show, but also exerted a profound influence on the culture of our times, from the phenomenon of midnight movies to glitter rock stars and their outrageous fashions. "Pearls Over Shanghai" is now Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm through New Years. Thrillpeddlers' Hypnodrome is located at 575 10th Street, San Francisco. Based loosely on John Colton's scandalous 1926 Broadway play "The Shanghai Gesture" (later transformed into a deliriously decadent art deco film noir by Josef von Sternberg in 1941), "Pearls Over Shanghai" is a comic mock-operetta about white slavery and miscegenation set in the colorful world of 1937 Shanghai, China. Link Martin parts the bamboo curtain, his politics swept aside by his love of the mystery and intrigue of the Orient. Placing his story at the crossroads of good and evil, his exotic "old sin town" is filled with singing sailors, witty whores, foolish immortals, handmaidens and henchmen, all taking their places in streets teeming with a mix of foreign aristocrats, opium addicts, and gangland slave-trade czars. Originally produced as a Nocturnal Dream Show and performed at midnight at the old Palace Theatre in Chinatown, "Pearls Over Shanghai" was the fabled and fabulous Cockettes' first and best original showpiece. This musical became the crown jewel of The Cockettes repertoire, enjoying three revivals in two years, including a notorious and infamous run at New York's Anderson Theatre in 1971. Although "Pearls Over Shanghai" had long been germinating in the fertile mind of Link Martin, it struck the trend-setting, gender-bending theatrical troupe as extremely fortuitous when the real Peking Opera played the same stage at the Palace Theatre. At the time, much was made over a missing trunk of sequined kimonos and props that seemed to vanish. However, the items were not lost and did reappear, some months later, spawning "Pearls Over Shanghai" Two, Three, and Four. For the Thrillpeddlers production, original Cockettes Tahara and Billy Bowers will lend their considerable talents to our resident costume mistress Kara Emry in order to create original designs reminiscent of the opulent 1930s Orient as well as the psychedelic splendor of 1960s San Francisco. Stage Director for "Pearls Over Shanghai" is Russell Blackwood, and original Cockette and composer Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn will serve as Musical Director. The cast will include original Cockette Rumi Missabu reprising his role as the evil Madame Gin Sling. Connie Champagne, Katya Smirnoff-Skyy, and Leanne Borghesi will alternate in the role of Petrushka, first created by disco diva Sylvester in the original productions. With a supporting cast of twenty, costumes a-plenty, and a score of some two dozen songs, this production promises to be the most eye-popping and toe-tapping in the Hypnodrome's history, with the scent of intoxicating perfume, poisonous flowers, opium, and sex oozing from every scene. Pairs of patrons will surely enjoy Hypnodrome's Shock Box seats for two, which garnered SF Weekly's "Best of San Francisco 2008" for "Best Bonus Theater Experience." These themed seats include sumptuous Turkish Lounges, as well as private boxes including "Heaven" and "Hell," "Pharaoh's Tomb," and "Padded Cell," which offer the opportunity for a heightened psychedelic experience during the "opium" blackout sequence at the climax of "Pearls Over Shanghai"—with added special effects as a nod to the 1950s horror movie gimmicks of William Castle.

Reminder: LGCSF Halloween in the Castro Opera by Jack Curtis Dubowsky @ Sat Oct 31 8pm – 9:30pm (Queer Things)
LGCSF Halloween in the Castro Opera by Jack Curtis DubowskyThe LESBIAN / GAY CHORUS OF SAN FRANCISCO presents HALLOWEEN IN THE CASTRO a new opera by JACK CURTIS DUBOWSKY. DATES: Friday, October 23, 2009 8pm, Saturday, October 24, 2009 8pm, Friday, October 30, 2009 8pm, Saturday, October 31, 2009 8pm. VENUE: Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco, 150 Eureka Street at 18th Street, San Francisco, San Francisco CA 94114 TICKETS: Call 1-800-838-3006 or visit http://www.lgcsf.org LINKS: http://lgcsf.org/HIC_press_page.html (Includes hi-res photos) http://www.destijlmusic.com http://www.dubowsky.blogspot.com Halloween in the Castro: Merging local politics with murder and mayhem, the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, under the direction of Stephanie Lynne Smith, presents Jack Curtis Dubowsky's horror opera Halloween in the Castro, a biting, in-your-face social commentary about what has gone wrong with Castro Halloween. In this world premiere opera, horrors past and present haunt San Francisco's iconic street. As Halloween approaches, neighborhood residents, suburbanite tourists, city politicians and local business owners have conflicting ideas of how the evening should unfold. But will they all survive to see the dawn? Halloween in the Castro is contemporary social commentary in the form of a traditional opera. Featuring an ensemble cast and an original score, the show educates, satirizes, and most of all, entertains. Over many years, the Castro's Halloween celebration has degenerated from a fun, quirky neighborhood event to an uncontrollable human mass plagued by bashings and murder. The yearly Castro Halloween debate and debacle has become a microcosm for San Francisco at large. As San Francisco grew with money and population from the technology boom, the facets that reflected its independent, queer and idiosyncratic beat became rare, commodified, or disrupted. The world thinks of the Castro as a 'Gay Mecca,' but the district itself struggles to manage an historic event in the face of recurring violence and masses of gawkers. Halloween in the Castro honors the history and the ongoing debate, even as the city and the neighborhood continue to look for a solution. SUPPORT: This event is supported in part through Subito, the quick advancement grant program of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Composers Forum. This event is also supported in part by a 2009 Pink Saturday Grant from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. LGCSF events are sponsored in part by a grant from Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund. LGCSF is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. All donations are fully tax-deductible. There are a variety of support and sponsorship opportunities for individuals and businesses. Please visit http://lgcsf.org/support.html or contact Chorus Manager Kristen Brown at manager@lgcsf.org. BIOS: LESBIAN / GAY CHORUS OF SAN FRANCISCO: The world's first mixed lesbian and gay chorus, LGCSF is dedicated to building and enriching the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender (LGBT) community through song and a love of music. This is LGCSF's thirtieth consecutive season. LGCSF was founded in 1980 and originally called the "San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Men's Community Chorus." The Chorus helped to found the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA) in 1981, and was renamed the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco in 1984. The Chorus has performed around the world, and hundreds of times in San Francisco. The Chorus has provided a forum for San Francisco's gay and lesbian music lovers to develop their talents, find good friends, and share their gifts with San Francisco's diverse communities. STEPHANIE LYNNE SMITH: Conductor, Artistic Director, Stage Director Stephanie Lynne Smith is an active pianist, conductor, clinician, vocal coach, worship leader, and chamber musician. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master of Music degree in chamber music performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her professional experience of more than a decade includes performing in master classes for Menahem Pressler and Emmanuel Ax, working with renowned composers such as Alden Jenks, David Garner and David Conte, and providing accompaniment for Sharon McNight, B.D. Wong, and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming. After accompanying the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco Chorus for two years, Stephanie was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor in 2002. She has presented numerous original compositions by queer composers living in the Bay Area, organized and hosted fundraisers and variety shows, and led the Chorus at the past two international GALA Festivals. In addition to her work with LGCSF, Stephanie is Music Director for the Worship and Praise service at MCC-San Francisco, founding and returning music director of New Spirit Community Church in Berkeley, co-founder of Gay, Lesbian and Allied Musicians (GLAM) Youth Choir, and a member of the Events Committee for GALA Choruses, Inc. Gay Shame Meetings at Modern TimesGAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving "values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org

Reminder: film: The King of Escape at Clay @ Thu Oct 29 9:30pm – 10:30pm (Queer Things)
film: The King of Escape at ClayThe King of Escape Alain Guiraudie (Le roi de l'évasion, France 2009) http://www.sffs.org/content.aspx?catid=8,38,56&pageid=1341 Director Alain Guiraudie in person: This inspired comedy from decidedly offbeat writer-director Alain Guiraudie (No Rest for the Brave) chronicles the midlife crisis of a pudgy, gay tractor salesman (Ludovic Berthillot, in a shrewdly and hilariously minimal performance) who, for a change of pace, runs away with a 16-year-old beauty (a charmingly earnest Hafsia Herzi, who also shone in Abdellatif Kechiche's The Secret of the Grain, SFIFF 2008). The young woman finds herself smitten with her unlikely knight after he defends her (with cash, not brawn) from a group of toughs. After a clumsy consummation of their ardor, the unexpected lovers find themselves pursued by the girl's father (Luc Palun), a rival tractor salesman, his associates and the local police. But the pursuit narrative is arguably only an excuse for an exquisite assortment of lovingly drawn eccentric characters, who in this delightful film prove a fully justified raison d'être. LGBT Community Center, Ceremonial Room, 4th Floor, 1800 Market Street, San Francisco, CA.
The LGBT Advisory Committee of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission invites the public to participate in a forum to discuss how to recognize alternative kinship structures among people who are not related by blood or legal adoption. Panelists include: Cathy Sakimura, Alice Kessler, Judy Appel. Comments by Mark Leno (invited), Tom Ammiano, David Campos (invited), Theresa Sparks and members of the public with experience in non-spousal alternative families. Questions to be discussed include:
