Reminder: Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times @ Sat Jan 30 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)
Gay Shame Meetings at Modern TimesGAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving "values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org

Reminder: Memorial for Chantal Salkey at El Rio @ Sat Jan 30 2pm - 6pm (Queer Things)
Memorial for Chantal Salkey at El RioLink to facebook page for Chantal's Memorial: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=284653387944&index=1 Note from Betty: Many in our community are noting the passing of Chantal Salkey who founded and produced the popular event known as Mango. She was woman who touched many lives and is warmly remembered. This message brings information about the upcoming memorial for her and how to participate. - Betty Memorial for Chantal Salkey Saturday, January 30th - Sunday, January 31st – All are invited to join in a final goodbye for Chantal who was much loved and is greatly missed. In her memory, an afternoon (MANGO style) event, planned for Saturday, January 30th, will be filled with pictures, poems, tears, laughter and more memories than anyone can count. This is a fundraiser as well - asking a sliding scale of $8 to any amount (your hearts content). All the proceeds will go to Chantal's favorite charities such as CUAV, SFWAR, and Haiti Relief. Please come early because the doors will open at 2:00 PM and the program will start at 2:30 PM promptly. Questions and info: Carol at dredlox@hotmail.com. Link to Make a Donation If You Can't Attend - Request for Photos - Condolences – Message from Christine De La Rosa - Chantal's commitment to bringing the best and most diverse music, DJs and people into her clubs, made her a visionary during her time here. She almost single-handedly introduced Hip Hop to the Lesbian club scene. She was responsible in helping some of the leading Bay Area DJs breakout in their careers. She created the first T-Dance for women in the Bay Area. She had a strong commitment for creating spaces where everyone was welcome. She was a powerhouse that preferred to stay in the background of her events while letting her staff, DJs and most importantly her patrons SHINE. On a personal note, when I arrived in the Bay Area a short year and a half ago I was very fortunate to be introduced to Chantal. We talked about my plans in the Bay Area and how I was so excited by all the possibilities that were here. One day she called and invited me to lunch. She sat me down and she shared with me her vision, her mission, her experiences. She gave me guidance, advice and her own personal philosophy. For those words of wisdom I am forever grateful. Chantal's vision, her person, her pioneering spirit will be missed by her friends, her family, her extended family, the people she worked with, her community and every person that was somehow touched by her. Christine aka Miz Chris
