Reminder: SF Intl. Arts Festival: Erling Wold's Fabrications presen... @ Sun May 29 7pm - 8pm (Queer Things)
SF Intl. Arts Festival: Erling Wold's Fabrications presents "Queer"SF Intl. Arts Festival: Erling Wold's Fabrications presents "Queer" SF Intl. Arts Festival: Southside Theater, Fort Mason Center San Francisco, CA It has been ten years since the first production of Erling Wold's Queer, and twenty-five since the publication of the novel, William Burroughs' seminal autobiography of his time in Mexico City. The new edition of which mentions Wold's "superb operatic adaptation," in the forward by Oliver Harris. The Bay Area Reporter wrote of the 2001 Production, "Brilliance characterized every facet of Erling Wold's Queer on opening night. From conception through execution, the chamber opera based on the William Burroughs novel more than did justice to Burroughs' spirit. It rekindled that spirit vividly for the audience, a sophisticated crowd that paid rapt attention to every nuance of inflection and expression from orchestra and actors alike." "Queer" stars Joe Wicht (aka Trauma Flintstone) recreating the landmark, narcotics fueled role of Burroughs' pseudonym William Lee, whose rendering of the character the San Francisco Chronicle described as, "virtuosic, utterly hypnotic As the magnetic but pitiable Lee, Flintstone embodies all of the character's swirls of conflicting emotion [a] moody, note-perfect performance." The story takes place in the late forties, after Burroughs has escaped to Mexico to avoid an "unpromising court date for heroin and marijuana possession." The city was tremendously corrupt, cheap to live in and tolerant of Burroughs' indiscretions, namely his heroin addiction and his homosexual desires. The anniversary Bay Area performances, which will be presented prior to the show's New York debut, will again be directed by Jim Cave.
