Masturbate-a-thon at the Center for Sex and Culture

In 1995, just months after US Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders had been fired for mildly pro-masturbation remarks, Good Vibrations launched National Masturbation Month. Dedicated to increasing discussion and ending the stigma surrounding self-pleasure, San Francisco's Center for Sex & Culture developed a live group version of the masturbate-a-thon, and on Sunday, May 30th, people will gather at CSC to masturbate (or watch from the audience area) and earn donations based on the pledges they've gathered. Hosted by Good Vibrations Staff Sexologist Dr. Carol Queen and porn superstar Nina Hartley, with Feminist Porn Award winner Jiz Lee and other special guests, the 2010 Masturbate-a-Thon will be the CSC's largest annual fundraiser. Online live feed (as well as a no-press, no-camera area) will be available; more details coming soon!
When: Sunday, May 30th.
Time: visit http://www.masturbate-a-thon.com for details
Where: Center for Sex and Culture. 1519 Mission Street (btw. 11th Street and S. Van Ness) – 2nd floor. If you need handicap access, please inform us in advance for a phone number to call upon arrival.

Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org

Reminder: Art show: Cameron Gray at Robert Berman / E6 Gallery @ Sat May 29 1pm - 5pm (Queer Things)

Art show: Cameron Gray at Robert Berman / E6 Gallery

Cameron Gray: "It's all Downhill from Here"
Where: ROBERT BERMAN / E6 GALLERY, 1632 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94102.
When: March 20, 2010- June 2010
Tel: 415.558.9975
Web Site: http://www.robertbermangallery.com

Robert Berman / E6 Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Cameron Gray. Los Angeles art critic Peter Frank declares, "Cameron Gray has become a master of a kind of collage whose formal roots are in century-old trick technology but whose spiritual sources are in surrealism and pop art." Like Photomosaics, Gray's paintings exist on two visual levels. Each painting is made up of a large number of smaller paintings on 3" x 4" wood tiles. Visually, things are not what they seem. As you look closer the larger image breaks down to reveal the smaller paintings that transform a simple portrait into numerous separate cells, which have their unique properties that differ from one another. For instance, The Pornification of Everything, is a portrait of Mona Lisa made from 900 paintings of hardcore pornography and Can't See the Forest is an 8' x 15' painting of a forest made from 2,200 paintings depicting traffic, factories, urbanity and violence.

Behind Gray's art is his work with digital, network manufacturing. His work begins as digital studies, which are divided into hundreds of small pieces and then outsourced, to be painted, by other artists, colleagues and Facebook friends. By breaking the painting down into a grid of pixels and outsourcing the work, Gray builds a virtual factory by way of the Internet. The smaller images used are thematic and play a vital role in the depiction of the larger image. This modern approach is used to create what appears to be a traditional oil painting.

Frank expresses, "If there is a political or even social message in this, it is the viewer's, not the artist's. Then again, the artist is asking the viewer to zoom in and zoom out in order to "read" pictures in, and out of, other pictures. The multi-leveling of perception in this case is itself a statement about – or, perhaps, demonstration of – how we perceive the world. That is, we understand contemporary life and its newly digitized landscape as a sum of pixels that comprise some sort of whole – albeit a whole that is itself unstable and threatens to fall apart into its components every time we walk outside, talk with one another, or even boot up and log on. As such, Cameron Gray's assemblages are the faces of our present reality. They are not the faces we see in the mirror, but the faces we see on one another – and on our many screens. They are animations made from many, many stills." Or as Gray puts it, "At times the act of viewing itself becomes very physical or like a strange dance. The viewer must walk forward, then backward or lean in very close to see the work. I want the viewing experience to be visual, physical and conceptual all at once."

Reminder: Boredom = Death: The Popstitutes 86-95 at Goteblud @ Sat May 29 12pm - 5pm (Queer Things)

Boredom = Death: The Popstitutes 86-95 at Goteblud

Boredom = Death: The Popstitutes 86-95
At Goteblud, 766 Valencia, San Francisco
http://goteblud.com

Starting Saturday, 3/20/10
Opening reception Saturday, 3/27/10 6-8pm
On display weekends from 12-5pm through 5/29/10

In 1986, three no-account gay barflies decided to fight back against the rising tide of Reagan-era conformity, complacency, and consumerism by forming an agit-prop band: The Popstitutes. Combining tape loops, live instruments, and seriously off-key vocals with a costume-heavy stage show, the band evolved a lewd, experimental, confrontational, and defiantly queer style of postmodern performance-protest. Throughout the late '80s, the group played at both night clubs and demonstrations (as well as an acid orgy, college, nude beach, ice cream parlor, and Tupperware Party) whilst expanding to include a revolving cast of unique talents and exhibitionistic oddballs.

The Popstitutes perfected a proto-rave, club-kid sensibility by way of a sincere DIY punk ethos, channelling anger and outrage into a festive party atmosphere, a defiant statement amidst the morose climate of an epidemic that had cast a dark shadow across San Francisco's artistic landscape. In their own words: "Dare to be Groovy!"

In 1990, the Popstitutes begat Klubstitute, an anything-goes queer cabaret they hoped would encourage others to adopt their ethos of unfettered self-expression. Launched at The Crystal Pistol, a Mission District dive bar, and thereafter floating around the city, Klubstitute presented underage punk bands, spoken word, drag kings and queens, poetry, avant garde music, art, theme nights, games, film screenings, and the gender-bending theatrical mash-ups of Tony Vaguely's stage troupe, the Sick & Twisted Players. Klubstitute MC and Popstitutes frontman, Diet - self-named as an homage to Princess Di and E.T. - believed that everyone should be a producer, as well as a consumer, of culture and constantly dragooned audience members into performing. The resulting interactive bedlam stood in stark contrast to the generic meat-markets that typified more predictable gay night spots.

In 1995, Diet succumbed to AIDS, effectively ending the group, the club, and the era. The formidable impact of the Popstitutes and Klubstitute on San Francisco's artistic community can be measured by the innumerable clubs, bands, performers and artists today who count them among their inspirations.

Goteblüd is proud to present a mixed-media installation of paper ephemera - flyers, letters, zines, lyrics and handbills - along with banners, photographs and mylar party ornaments, paying homage to the playful fluorescent chaos that the Popstitutes are known for.
