Reminder: Lea DeLaria in Last Butch Standing at Victoria Theater @ Sat Dec 31 9pm - 10pm (Queer Things)
Lea DeLaria in Last Butch Standing at Victoria TheaterThe RHINO NEW YEAR'S EVE SPECTACULAR returns with Broadway star and goddessvocalist. Lea DeLaria brings her one of a kind blend of song and hilarious satire to the Victoria. There are punch lines, torch songs and plenty of scatting in Lea DeLaria's show THE LAST BUTCH STANDING. The show is a mix of swinging jazz and stand-up blue comedy that explores what it is like to be a bad ass dyke in the post Ellen 21st Century. A LGBT icon, Lea DeLaria is a stand-up comic who was the first openly gay comic to appear on national television in the US (Arsenio Hall, 1993), from this point forward she has toured the world with her one-of-a-kind blend of cool jazz and in your face comedy, often creating stirs (The US Congress officially "criticized" Lea in 1993) but always winning accolades (MUFF DIVA - BEST OF THE FEST Edinburgh 1993.) Since then she has played venues from Provancetown to San Francisco, appeared on numerous television shows (Will and Grace,Friends) and in films (The First Wives Club, Edge of Seventeen). Brantley of the New York Times describes Lea as, "Every inch a star." Ring in the New Year with the most outrageous, tuneful show in town. Reminder: Gay Shame Meeting @ Sat Dec 31 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)
Gay Shame MeetingGAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving "values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. Gay Shame was meeting Saturdays at Modern Times on Valencia, but the store has moved to 24th Street but info about new location for Gay Shame meetings isn't up yet. So check http://gayshamesf.org

Wilde Chats at Sweet InspirationsHaven't had a really good meaningful conversation lately? Then come and explore Wilde Chats, one of The Community Initiative's most popular activities. Meeting at a variety of San Francisco's distinctive neighborhood cafes, a large diverse group of gay men explores topics and issues that are important to us as gay men. A great way to make new friends on a level that doesn't usually happen in bars or clubs. Wilde Chats is a loosely structured community-driven group get together every Saturday morning to discuss specific issues affecting us as gay men and our gay community. The group is lead following a "Socratic" model; rather than talk about solutions and answers to problems, the idea is to expand on the days topic by analyzing it and breaking it up into other questions. The discussions typically focus on the hidden/unspoken assumptions, generalities and concepts that we as gay men make, and the differences that our various points of reference imply. Wilde Chats are currently taking place at the times and locations listed below. Wilde Chats meets 10:30AM - 12:00PM Saturdays at Sweet Inspirations, 2239 Market Street between Sanchez and Noe.

Children of the Cockettes (extended 90 minute roughcut)http://oddballfilms.blogspot.com/2011/12/mister-was-children-of-cockettes-thurs.html Oddball Films and Mister WA present Children of the Cockettes (extended 90 minute roughcut). Through the lens of The Cockettes' heritage, Mister WA explores the free-spirited and non-conformist performance torches carried by the likes of Thrillpeddlers, Trannyhack and Peaches Christ. This organically-developed documentary investigates the current resurgence of glam gender performances and theatre of the ridiculous in contemporary San Francisco. The free-form documentary integrates The Cockettes' esthetics down to its narrative as it weaves a cinematic quilt of queer art, performance, LGBT community, music and glamor unique to San Francisco. This project feeds off of hundreds of hours of video footage gathered in service to local performance community and presents a "Who's Who" of interconnected Bay area culture vignettes. Come early and catch the pre-show of Cockettes-era footage from the Oddball Film vaults and a live show by performers featured in Children of the Cockettes! The filmmaker and 'original' Cockette Rumi Missabu will be in attendance. Audience feedback and commentary are encouraged as the filmmaker enters his final round of revisions prior to release. Cockette Rumi Missabu' s cult classic DVD Elevator Girls in Bondage will be available for sale, hand-signed and kissed by Rumi!
