film: Codebreaker (about Alan Turing) at the MetreonCODEBREAKER, a highly acclaimed movie about Alan Turing will have its San Francisco premier this Thursday (Nov. 1) at 7:30 PM at the Metreon Theater, 135 Fourth Street. This feature length docu-drama tells of the compelling life, tragic death and lasting legacy of Alan Turing, the genius mathematician credited as the driving intellectual force behind the development of the computer in the 1930's. Also, Turing played a pivotal role in helping the Allies win World War II by breaking the German naval Enigma code. Ten years later, instead of accolades, Turing faced criminal prosecution because he was gay. In 1952, the British Government forced him to undergo chemical castration as punishment for his homosexuality. In despair, Turing committed suicide on June 7, 1954. He was only 41 years old. "Alan Turing is one of the most important people of the last century and it's a shame that most people have never heard of him and still fewer understand his lasting legacy," says Patrick Sammon, the film's creator and one of its Executive Producers. "Hopefully this film will help Turing receive more recognition for his incredible contribution to our world." Sammon will attend the San Francisco premiere to offer an introduction and provide a live Q&A with the audience after the film. The showing is co-sponsored by the LGBT Center of San Francisco. The organization will receive part of the proceeds.
