The News: Queer Performance Series at SOMArtshttp://www.somarts.org/thenewsnovember/ SOMArts Cultural Center Usually held on the first Tuesday of each month, The News is the place to see fresh, queer performance. The News spotlights spotlights queer experiments, debut works, and works-in-progress by pre-selected solo artists, groups or troupes. In anticipation of the 2012 United States presidential election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, The News moves to Wednesday, November 7, 2012 and invites politically themed performances. $5. Advance tickets: The November edition of The News features return performers Nic Alea, Suwon Cho, Vain Hein, Shaunna Vella, Dr. Zebrovski and creator, curator and host Kolmel WithLove, as well as three performers new to The News: Dean Disaster, Jenalee Harmon and Erin Malley. Performer Biographies: Suwon Cho is a performance artist who engaged the imagination of audiences, where they encounter new experiences, feelings, surprise and excitement. Her performance usually takes a form of mono-drama where she is disguised as a fictional character and a narrative unfolds. She incorporates body movement and sound in a confusing and absurd way. In addition to performance, she also explores drawing, writing and music. She is in a band, Cookie Tongue. She received her B.F.A. at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea in 2010 and received an M.F.A. degree at San Francisco Art Institute in May, 2012. She has participated in group shows at Diego Riviera Gallery and Swell Gallery, and has performed at SOMArts, Arc gallery and Performance Art Institute. Dean Disaster has been performing since 2003 and currently co-hosts San Francisco's only Drag King Variety Show "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" every first Sunday of the month at The Stud. He can also be seen on Bay Area stages at Truck, El Rio, the White Horse, the Castro Street Fair and in "The Monster Show," "Debauchery" and "World of Wonderment." He has performed in Guerneville, CA and in Berlin. He is always very nerdy but thinks of himself as a punk rock kid. You can find out more at www.deeleit.com Jenalee Harmon is a multi-media artist working in performance, installation, photography and video. Her work explores the exchange of failures and expectations between audience and artist. She received her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2010 with a major in New Genres. She currently lives and works in San Francisco. More information at www.jenaleeharmon.com Vain Hein premiered in the San Francisco drag scene in August of 2011, and quickly became known for their gender bending, Gallagher-esque shenanigans that interrogated the politics of the audience and the performer. Often appearing multiple times at once, and constantly shape shifting, Vain Hein operates as the muse, the mannequin and the thesis statement for San Francisco based artist Lukey B.'s most featured project, "HAUS of urHEINOUS." The HAUS functions as a concept tank, a workshop for experimental imagery and a platform to collaborate with other artists known as "HAUS GUESTS." The HAUS also serves as a means to project the schizophrenic selves of the artist who have been created by a pop culture induced psychosis, and it is Vain Hein's main purpose to represent this specific state of mind. Erin Malley works at the intersection of contemporary dance performance, media design and theater. Originally from Kalamazoo, MI, she spent several years in NYC prior to relocating to the Bay Area in 2009. Erin's choreography has been seen locally at CounterPULSE, Million Fishes Gallery, Milkbar, MAPP and at the Garage; in NYC at HERE Arts Center, PS122, and Galapagos Art Space, among others. malleabledancetheater.org Shaunna Vella is a performer, dancer, teacher and student who has been creating work in the Bay Area for more than ten years. For many years she worked for local dance companies and had exciting and adventures full of debauchery while touring the states and abroad. She is currently interested in creating her own work in collaboration with friends and artists investigating queer feminism, improvisational somatic performance, sacred spaces and ephemeral alters, dinosaurs, counter-dependency, relationship to Facebook, globalization and berry body painting. She currently teaches at St. Mary's College. Kolmel WithLove is the creator and the host of The News. Kolmel, curates, builds cameras and costumes, collaborates with other artists, makes films, and performs. Her films have screened in a variety of settings including Frameline Film Festival, MIX Mexico, Seattle Center of Contemporary Art, RAID Projects and in the book and DVD project "Strange Attractors." Kolmel has performed in venues including SOMArts Cultural Center, CounterPULSE, Highways Performance Space, The Velaslavasay Panorama Theatre, The Garage, various galleries, a few living rooms, two very nice leather bars, and a piano lounge. Dr. Zebrovski, whose new show "Hour of Power" premieres at The Garage on November 9 and 10, said, "Dr. Zebrovski is being #1 dance psychic in world! Liking to create over-top atmosphere for interaction through interpretative dance of supernatural psychic visions. Dr. Zebrovski is giving interaction through online videos and in-person tarot reading and astrology and occult. Minimal usage color is being for relaxation of mind, be give in to soothing black and white for brain loosening."
