Smack Dab open mic featuring Randy Alfred at MagnetSmack Dab open mic hosted by Larry-bob Roberts and Kirk Read Wednesday, February 20, 8pm, open mic signup starts at 7:30 Our monthly open mic night, Smack Dab, is all ages, all genders, all the time. Randy Alfred is editor of MAD SCIENCE: Einstein's Fridge, Dewar's Flask, Mach's Speed, and 362 Other Inventions and Discoveries That Made Our World. Randy was the editor of and a frequent contributor of the "This Day in Tech" blog at Wired.com, which he joined as a copy editor in 2007. He also worked as senior news writer at Paul Allen's Tech TV cable channel. Alfred is now looking forward to an active retirement of writing, teaching, traveling and volunteering with the San Francisco GLBT Historical Society. He might also resume writing double-dactyl verse, which he put side decades ago in the interests of paying his bills. His journalistic experience extends over more than three decades in print, radio, TV and the web. He was twice editor of the Sentinel and a founder of the San Francisco Bay Times and of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. He was producer and host of the radio show The Gay Life on KSAN-FM from 1979 to 1984. His research led the National News Council to brand as "unfair" the 1980 CBS TV show "Gay Power, Gay Politics," and the network issued an on-air apology for its distortions and misrepresentations. After years of being the news person who explained tech tools to the newsroom and newsroom needs to the techies, he also spent three years doing the same thing from inside his company's IT department as a database administrator. Alfred has a master's in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale University, where his wide-ranging interdisciplinary studies included the history of science. He taught sociology and American Studies at Long Island University for two years. "Journalism is just high-shutter-speed sociology," he quips. "Or maybe sociology is journalism with a thyroid problem." He's lived in the same Edwardian apartment since 1978 and doesn't move quickly to new technologies. "I'm not a Luddite," he explains. "I'm an nth adopter. When I need it, I'll get it. But I never buy software with a zero in the number." The big question: Mac or Windows? "I'm bi-platformal." He was a friend of -- and cruised with -- Harvey Milk. He also had sex once with author-pornographer Sam Steward, who had sex once with Lord Alfred Douglas, the beloved of Oscar Wilde. Presented by Army of Lovers, a project of the Queer Cultural Center with support from the San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council.
