Screening: Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement at The New Parkway Theater in OaklandACLU of Northern California is hosting an event on Thursday, March 28th (6:30 – 9:00pm) (note new date and time) to celebrate the love of Edie Windsor and Thea Selby with a screening of "Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement" at the New Parkway Theater. Edie and Thea were together for 44 years before Thea died due to complications from multiple sclerosis. Although the state of New York recognized their marriage, the federal government did not due to the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DoMA). As a result, Edie was fined $363,000 by the U.S. government, which would have been $0 had they not been a same-sex couple. Now, Edie is the ACLU's plaintiff in "Windsor v. United States" wherein the ACLU challenges the constitutionality of DoMA. A victory in this case would be a landslide victory for LGBT individuals across the country. After the film screening, we are hosting a Q&A for individuals to learn about how this will affect them. This is a benefit for the ACLU, although our primary goal is to reach out to and find new members to learn about us and support us in our work through activism, advocacy and philanthropy. We are encouraging all attendees to become monthly, sustaining members (as low as $10/month). In return, they will receive two entrance passes, two drink tickets, and some cool ACLU shwag. If individuals cannot join on a monthly level, they can join as a one-time annual member on a sliding scale of $5 - $125. Everyone will get pizza!
