Comedy Returns to El RioComedy Returns to El Rio will take place every 2nd Monday of the month http://koshercomedy.com Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ Presents… "Comedy Returns to El Rio!" Monday, August 12, 2013 @ 8pm El Rio • 3158 Mission St (@ Precita) • SF Tix: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/427605 • (800) 838-3006 San Francisco…Now in its 5th year, this monthly (every 2nd Monday of the month) multicultural comedy show features the best of Bay Area comedians and beyond. It takes place at El Rio, where SF comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) began her stand up comedy career 24 years ago. This month's show feature one real Brit and one fake one. With: Shazia Mirza (Pakistani Muslim comic from London), Will Durst (SF's premiere political comic), Nigel Arrisson (Capitalist and Theatre Critic for The London Fog), Casey Ley ("Bay Area's Best Comic" SF Weekly 2012), and Lisa Geduldig. Shazia Mirza, a native of Birmingham, England, has sold out shows across the US and Europe with her taboo-breaking, button-pressing, smart, sly, deadpan humor. Her credits include Last Comic Standing and the BBC's Have I Got News For You. She fuses contemporary issues with personal experiences. The London-based comedian grabbed national attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by performing her act in a hijab and beginning with, "My name is Shazia Mirza. At least, that's what it says on my pilot's license." That was the year she won her first award, at the London Comedy Festival. Since then, she's been on a meteoric rise: she has appeared on 60 Minutes, been featured in the New York Times, and performs sold-out shows all over the world including such hot spots as Dubai, Kosovo, Pakistan, and Texas. Shazia recently got her own BBC TV show whose working title is Shazia Stands Up; recorded a special comedy show for BBC Radio this past March; and this year alone has performed sold-out shows in Sweden, Denmark, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Cyprus, and Los Angeles. But San Francisco is her favorite place in the whole world to perform. www.shaziamirza.com Will Durst is acknowledged by peers and press alike as one of the premier political satirists in the country. He has patched together an incomparable comedy quilt of a career, weaving together columns, books, radio and television commentaries, acting, voiceovers and stand- up into a hilarious patchwork of outraged and outrageous common sense. The New York Times calls him, "quite possibly the best political comedian working in the country today." He writes a nationally syndicated humor column and is a frequent contributor on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News & Current TV. He has told jokes in 14 countries and racked up 800+ television appearances. Despite blistering reproach, he continues to slather ketchup on hot dogs. www.willdurst.com Nigel Arrisson is publicly alcoholic and yet, "privately gay"— at least that's what he tells his audiences. An alternative character creation of stand up comedian/actor and writer Steven Alan Green, Nigel is everything nobody wants to be, but he can't help it. Presenting himself as "Capitalist and Theatre Critic for The London Fogg," Nigel is definitely from the upper class of England, but at the same time, is subject to wanting to fit in, just like the rest of us. Nigel tries to ease us, the audience, with funny explanations and insights as to the differences between American and British cultures, and thus our different ways of thinking. A genuine philosophical shift, Nigel elucidates on everything from the overuse of the word "sorry" to the public embarrassment of asking where the Starbucks "executive lounge" is. He is neither judgmental nor real. Though, just like Geppetto's Pinocchio, Nigel wishes nothing more, than to be "more American" and yet, tragically and comically, he can never truly be. For Nigel is merely a stage character, ultimately a sad reflection on the lonely everyman. Nigel Arrisson's creator is an American comedian who reviews live stand up comedy in his popular blog "Enjoy the Veal." www.jewishjournal.com/enjoytheveal Casey Ley is a San Francisco-based comedian. He hears this a lot: "Hey! You're that funny gay comic, aren't you?" Casey's comedy has been featured nationwide in clubs from LA to NY and festivals like Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, OR and the Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin, TX. He is the host and creator of the weekly comedy game show "Mayhem Trivia" at Dr. Teeh and the Electric Mayhem. His comedy has appeared on NPR, and in 2012 he was voted "The Bay Area's Best Comic" by readers of The SF Weekly. Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last December); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion. El Rio Tickets at the door: $7-$20
