Oakland: Queer Contra 6th Anniversary Dance at Humanist HallQueer Contra 6th Anniversary Dance Saturday, April 17 Dance 7-10 pm Contra Cafe 10-11 pm Chris Ricciotti calls to The Raggedy Annes Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street in Oakland $10 (or pay what you can) Six years ago, out of the great yawning abyss of nothingness, a dance of eternal bliss and friendly exuberance sprung forth. To many beings, it was known as Queer Contra Dance, and, soon after, a mighty dwelling for Queer Contra known as Humanist Hall was formed. Dancers began to travel across the barren earth to join in the monthly rites of swings, heys, allemandes and rollicking fun in honor of that sacred dance known as contra. On Saturday, April 17, Queer Contra Dance celebrates its 6th anniversary with Boston's Chris Ricciotti calling. Chris is that multi-gifted caller of multi-dance genres who began the gender-role-free contra dance phenomenon. He's fabulous, and among queer contra dancers, Chris has long held the title of "Queen Mum." Celebratory live music is provided by that talented trio of Raggedy Annes: Anne Goess, Andy Eggleston and Charlie Hancock; it's Charlie's handsome red beard that gives him RA status, plus his whiz-bang piano-playing to Anne and Andy's amazingly deft fiddling. Our anniversary will be even happier if it includes you. Please join us AND invite your friends along. Beginners (as always) are welcome -- but come around 7pm while the learning curve is relatively gentle. After the dance, stay for Contra Café, a leisurely hour of food and chat at Hum Hall.
