Reminder: AIRspace presents This is What I Want @ Wed Jun 30 8pm - 9:30pm (Queer Things)
AIRspace presents This is What I WantJune 30, July 1 AIRspace presents This is What I Want The Garage, 975 Howard St. 8pm Tickets: $10-$20 Buy Tickets on-line: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/112592 This Is What I Want. Relentlessly sexual new work by juiced-up and pleasure-seeking dance and performance artists. Curated by Jesse Hewit with Keith Hennessy, Anna "Bannanz" Whitehead, Em Gift, Evan Johnson, Hana Erdman, Jess Curtis, Johanna Buchignani, Julie Phelps, Kegan Marling, Macklin Kowal, Maryam Rostami, Mary Ann Brooks, sorvillo / blindsight, Ryan Crowder, Sara Kraft, Shawnrey Notto. Curatorial note: "I find, in my dance/performance communities, that performed moments and themes of sex and sexuality are too often still overly codified, still shown in symbols and behind scrims, veils, and false starts, and still lacking a quality of plain presence and unfettered and truthful testimony. It's as if we want to say what it is that we want, but are burdened by what we think comprises a proper artistic composition." In response to this, I want to curate works that reimagine composition as simply a structure that unfolds as a result of directly answering a question. So...the question: "What do I find sexy?" This question, to me, is still one of the most complicating, politicizing, live-wire, and interesting points of personal expression. This is what I want. will be a night of world premieres that enagage with the possibility of performance as a clear and strong medium for the bold telling, showing, and doing of our sexual desires, preferences, fetishes, and needs." For this event, I want to invite extraordinary exposure and risk. By offering up the language and movement of our sexualities in this particular way, I hope to crack open a fertile new body of work; one that allows the otherwordly beauty, conflict, and creativity of sex to steadily breathe...and to move us in crazy crazy ways."

Reminder: Trans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing Class @ Mon Jun 28 6:30pm - 8pm (Queer Things)
Trans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing ClassTrans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing Class Taught by Eli Conley Mondays 6:30 – 8 pm Niebyl-Proctor Maxist Library Fee is sliding scale $120 - $200 for the 8 week session. If you are interested but cost is tricky, please contact Eli at voiceandglitter@gmail.com about a scholarship. To register, contact: voiceandglitter@gmail.com Course description: This is a community class intended for self-identified transgender, queer, bisexual, two-spirit, gay, genderqueer, lesbian, and gender non-conforming* who want to develop a fuller range and comfort with their singing voice. People with all levels of vocal experience (or lack thereof) are welcome and encouraged to join us! The class will culminate in an optional performance of songs. Glitter will also be optional but highly encouraged. Eli's teaching technique draws from his classical, folk, jazz and musical theater singing background. We will focus on bringing out the joy of singing solo and in a group, no matter what your musical background, learning how to find your core sound, and singing in tune with confidence throughout your voice's whole range. The space where the class will be taking place is wheelchair-accessible. Unfortunately the bathrooms are not accessible for most modern (wide) chairs. *This space is created intentionally for LGBTQ communities because LGBTQ folks all too often find spaces focused on singing lacking relevance to our lives and awareness of our needs. If you have any questions about whether the class is right for you, please don't hesitate to contact Eli at voiceandglitter@gmail.com
Former Student Testimonials From spring 2010 class co-taught by Eli and Wendy Vastine: "Thank you so much. It felt like this class was a springboard into many more singing and other creative adventures." "Now I'm more confident, more willing to go outside of my boundaries and be silly to find what works.... THANK YOU SO FREAKIN' MUCH!!!" "I love the laughter and supportive group energy." "It was amazing to see everyone grow so much and really connect with their own voice! Like bodywork therapy as well as artistic expression -- yay!!!! Sparkle power!" Teacher Bio:

The Pansy Craze sensation of the 1930's swept the nation delivering queer cabaret in all its splendor. Led by La Malin, the creator of the movement, you're serenaded into a falsetto spell and taken on an illicit journey that stitches together outrageous songs and stories about the struggles and triumphs of seven Queer artists who found radical ways to counter the severe repression of their eras. Join Danny Kaye, Klaus Nomi, Issan Dorsey, Sylvester, Brazil's Ney Matogroso and Azis of Bulgaria, as they share their own extraordinary stories. With generous support from The San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Eye Zen Art is a fiscally sponsored project of CounterPulse. In 1998 he developed the company Eye Zen Art producing performances and installations featured at The Oakland Museum of California, Theater Artaud, Zeum, Yerba Buena Center, SOMARTS, Theater of Yugen, and CounterPulse. He has performed as a member of several Butoh companies including Harupin–Ha, and Ink Boat from 1994-1999. Since 2000 he has been performing and creating visuals with Keith Hennessy and the acclaimed contemporary circus company Circo Zero in the US and Europe. Reminder: @FramelineFest Howl at the Castro @ Sun Jun 27 7:30pm - 8:30pm (Queer Things)
@FramelineFest Howl at the Castro USA, 2010, 90 Minute Running Time Genre/Subjects: Biography / History, Discrimination, Drama, Gay, Local Filmmakers / Subjects Program: Closing Night Language: English DIRECTORS: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman http://www.frameline.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=2046&FID=47 "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked… " So starts the opening line of Howl in this highly-anticipated film about the early years of poet Allen Ginsberg. Academy Award winning documentarians Rob Epstein (The Times of Harvey Milk, Celluloid Closet) and Jeffrey Friedman (Celluloid Closet) bend genres to depict the spark of a literary revolution. James Franco shines as a handsome young Allen Ginsberg, making waves with his poem, Howl. The film is a hybrid of stories, including the famous Ginsberg reading of Howl at the Six Gallery. It also includes an imagined recreation of an unpublished interview allegedly given to Time in 1957; Howl's obscenity trial in a San Francisco courtroom; and vivid and luminous animation by Ginsberg collaborator Eric Drooker, capturing the essence of the poem. The extraordinary format adds to a feeling of restlessness, a sense that 1950s America is on the cusp of radical change, which are sentiments that saturate Ginsberg's poetry. It's awild ride of emotions aswe see the beginnings of Ginsberg's relationship with his lover, Peter Orlovsky (Gossip Girl cutie Aaron Tveit) alongside the historic courtroom drama. An impressive cast adds depth to this masterpiece of a film, including David Strathaim as the prosecutor and Jon Hamm (Mad Men) who's brilliant as famed attorney Jake Ehrlich. Also making memorable appearances are Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker and Treat Williams. A minimalist score by Carter Burwell provides a rich supporting role in this fascinating portrait of an epic poem and its iconoclastic creator.
