Post:Ballet inaugural season Concert One at Cowell TheaterPost:Ballet announces its inaugural season July 16 – 17, 2010 Post:Ballet launches its inaugural season with performances at the Cowell Theater. Concert One promises to offer diverse audiences the opportunity to experience innovative and exhilarating contemporary dance. Concert One will be a truly inspiring presentation of exceptional dancing by some of today's leading dance artists from around the country. All works presented at Concert One have been choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Dekkers. Dekkers has spent the past decade presenting pivotal works to critical acclaim with his choreography being hailed as "intelligent and packed with technical challenges"(New York Times) and simply "magic" (Arizona Republic). 'Milieu,' set to an original score which will be performed live by the composer Daniel Berkman, focuses on the evolution of man and humanity, dissolving into a blank canvas to be defined by the viewer's perspective. The Arizona Republic declared that "Dekkers has a talent for making each step lead organically into the next, so you never get the feeling he's just putting one move after another, but making each follow like the words of a meaningful sentence. It was magic." 'B-Sides,' staged to the curiously engaging music of Grizzly Bear, is an intimate examination of an individual's innate dichotomy. First premiered in 2009 as a work for one man and one woman, the work illustrates the duality of an individual rather than two unique persons. Concert One will feature a new twist on the pas de deux through the effortless expression by two male dancers. 'Flutter,' featuring three women, is a new work by Dekkers that abstractly examines an individual's development within a rigid social structure. The first movement is set to Steve Reich's Clapping Music, a percussive, polyrhythmic work that Dekkers uses to express the relentlessness of society's expectations for conformity. In the second movement, staged to J.S. Bach's Partita for Solo Violin No. 2, the rigid structuring of the first movement melts away as the dancers' individuality and vulnerability emerge. 'No One Does It Like You' is a love story set to music by Department of Eagles. First performed in 2009, The Arizona Republic proclaimed that the work was "well past promise… It was the highlight of the evening. Danced by Dekkers with Raychel Weiner and sharing the stage with a folding ladder, it had the advantage of being about something: genuinely erotic love. The two dancers drank up each other the way lovers do in the stage of their relationship when they simply cannot get enough of each other, body, smell, taste, touch." Concert One will conclude with a world premiere by Dekkers featuring live music and an original score performed by composer Jacob Wolkenhauer and musician Joe Hickey.
