GREMLINS 7:00
Director Joe Dante takes the Norman Rockwell/It's a Wonderful Life approach to Christmas and turns it on its ear by unleashing a horde of terrible beasties onto an idyllic small town. Inventor Hoyt Axton buys a furry creature known as a "Mogwai" from an old Chinese shop in New York City, but when he gives the adorable critter to his son Zach Galligan -- and they ignore the important rules about not getting the creature wet or allowing him to eat after midnight -- terrifying, scaly, and altogether impolite little monsters are born. This darkly funny and exhilaratingly violent movie helped spawn the creation of the PG-13 rating, and Phoebe Cates' monologue about why she hates Christmas is one for the ages. Also stars Judge Reinhold and Polly Holliday. 1984 | 106 min | 35mm

followed by Black Christmas at 9:05.
