Jen Schande: 19: Songs for and Inspired by Valencia Chapter 19 at The Hemlock19: Songs for and Inspired by Valencia Chapter 19 San Francisco's indie rock talent, Jen Schande, has recently recorded a record based on the 19th chapter of 'Valencia', the gritty memoir by Michelle Tea recalling her experiences in the queer counter-culture scene of SF in the 90's. Schande's musical reworking of the piece recalls the female-fronted indie rock of the 90's like Liz Phair and Cat Power with hints of Sleater-Kinney. The record shows a mastery of angular guitars with every note ringing out in pure intention to belie an understanding between writer and subject matter. Valencia is now being reworked for the big screen and promises to be an exciting venture, with each chapter filmed by a different director and different casts. Among those involved with the film are Michelle Tea herself, Margaret Cho, Jill Soloway and many others. In addition to scoring Chapter 19, Schande also offers her talents for a song featured in Chapter 10. Plus sets by Pataha Hiss and Li Xi. $6.
