Reminder: Gay Men's Sketch - 25th anniversary exibit opening at Magnet @ Fri Mar 1, 2013 8pm - 10pm (Queer Things)

Gay Men's Sketch - 25th anniversary exibit opening at Magnet

On Friday, March 1st, from 8-10pm, Gay Men's Sketch will celebrate 25 years of drawing at Magnet at 4122 18th St, near Castro St. The opening is free and will include complimentary refreshments and special door prizes. The show will be up for the entire month of March. Call Magnet at 415.581.1600 for open hours.

Gay Men's Sketch was started by Mark I Chester in 1987 when he experienced homophobia in drawing classes at City College of San Francisco. While shocked to discover such attitudes in San Francisco, Chester decided to try and create a safe welcoming space for gay male artists to draw and socialize with other gay male artists. As far as we know, Gay Men's Sketch is the longest running public drawing group in the world. We are older than the most well known gay male drawing groups that meet at the Tom of Finland Foundation in LA or the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Museum in New York.

Twenty one artists from the group will be participating in the show using many different mediums including pencil, pen, charcoal, pastel, ink, watercolor and an ipad. Our artists range from their 20s to their 80s and over the years sketchers have come from a wide range of occupations including fine artist, doctor, lawyer, graphic artist and minister.

One of the very special things about Gay Men's Sketch is that we are open to sketchers of all skill levels, from beginner to fine artist. We're professional, but the group is also a social experience. We're both friendly and fun. Some sketchers tell us that the group has been a transformative experience in their lives.

While most of the drawings will be of classical nude poses, there will also be some drawings from Hot Draw! a subgroup of Gay Men's Sketch that focuses on more erotic and explicit poses including fetish, leather and bondage.

For 25 years Gay Men's Sketch has met in Chester's Folsom St. flat/studio. Chester, a photographer, says, "It has been an amazing life experience and I am forever grateful to the artists who have drawn with us and our models who became our muses. The drawing group has made a lasting impression on my life, artistic vision and photography. Other gay drawing groups seek to copy what we created here in San Francisco."
