Face and Figure: New Work by Adam Ansell and Jeffrey Cheung

On view: June 16-30. Opening reception: Thursday, June 19, 6-9 pm.

Welcome to "Face and Figure," a collection of bold and unique new works of portraiture by Adam Ansell and by Jeffrey Cheung.

Adam Ansell will be showing a series of 42" x 24" paintings, depicting characters from his theatre group, people on the street, and imaginary personalities. "In my mind, for their own sake, they are fantasy costume renderings," Ansell says of the paintings. "I accumulate the cheapest paint I can—people know to knock on my door if they have a little gross bit of color. I never do any sketches beforehand—I try to let the paintings form very organically. They go in all kinds of different directions, and the painting style is becoming a lot more loose. Some of the simplest-looking pieces are the most labored, others come out really quick."

Jeffrey Cheung's large-scale paintings and drawings and tiny zines frequently present naked men, sometimes in chaotic group formations. "I don’t really see my work as being that sexual," says Cheung, in a recent Tiny Splendor interview. "Sometimes a piece will start out from a idea or position that can be interpreted as sexual, but the outcome is usually more about disconnect and anxiety rather than sex. I would like to think of my work being more about human connection and dependency and less the actual act of sex ... most of their expressions are confusion and excitement, and I feel confused and excited every day!
