film: The Cockettes at Red Vic Movie HousePlaying June 14 & 15, 2011 The Cockettes Dirs. Bill Weber and David Weissman US 2002 This bittersweet 'fairy' tale of a lost San Francisco - a time when glitter, sexuality, politics and gender flowed as freely as the drugs - documents the famed SF drag performance troupe, The Cockettes, in all their thrift shop finery. As the psychedelic San Francisco of the '60's began evolving into the gay San Francisco of the '70's, The Cockettes, decked themselves out in gender-bending drag and glitter for a series of legendary midnight musicals at the Palace Theater in North Beach. Using beautiful archival footage and interviews with surviving Cockettes and their admirers, the film follows the highs and lows of the troupe from their early days as a bunch of stoned hippie queens to their split with their messianic leader, Hibiscus, and their infamous performances in NYC. The Cockettes' influence on everything drag is profound. Although their last performance was in 1972, the Cockettes inspired the glitter rock era of David Bowie, Elton John, and The New York Dolls, as well the campy extravaganzas of Bette Midler and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (100m) Q & A with director Weissman after 7:15 show Tues. and director Weber after 7:15 show Wed. Red Vic Movie House, 1727 Haight Street San Francisco, CA 94117
