more details » A Conversation with Rex Ray and Cydney Payton at Gallery 16 A Conversation with Rex Ray and Cydney Payton Tonight, October 18th 7-9 PM Please join us for a special conversation with local artist Rex Ray and former CEO and Chief Curator for MCA Denver, Cydney M. Payton. Rex talks about his unique ability to straddle the line between fine art and commercial works in his recent article in the Chronicle. In case you missed Rex's article, click here. In conjunction with his current exhibition, the discussion will include topics related to the artist's studio practice, his marriage of graphic design and fine art, the pitfalls of operating in this area, the discord between popular appeal and critical acclaim. For his current show, San Francisco artist Rex Ray has filled the gallery with his characteristic mix canvases and collage of unmistakable graphic power. Click here to see more from the exhibition. Ray's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions worldwide including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, University Art Museum in Berkeley, San Jose Museum of Modern Art, The Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. Cydney M. Payton, is the former CEO and Chief Curator of MCA Denver. In recent years, she was the curator for Over One Billion Served, the first U.S. exhibition of Chinese photography featuring Zhoa Bandi, Zhang Dali, and Wang Qingsong. She also curated exhibitions of David Altmejd, Larry Bell, Lynda Benglis, Candice Breitz, Yang Fudong, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili, Rex Ray, and Collier Schorr. Group exhibitions have included work by J-Pop masters, Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami. Her recent book, The Legend of Bud Shark and his Indelible Ink features Bay Area artists Don Ed Hardy, Enrique Chagoya, and Hung Liu.
