Come down and party! Modern TImes opened on Sanchez Street in October of 1971; forty years (and three moves) later, we are still proud to call San Francisco our home. We are the Mission District's oldest collectively-run independent bookstore!

Jean Pauline started working at Modern Times in 1971 and is celebrating her 90th birthday party with us. Jean was a founder of the Labor History Workshop and led some of the first women's consciousness raising groups in the SF Bay Area.

For this celebration, Modern Times is thrilled to partner with our neighbor, La Victoria Bakery and Kitchen. La Victoria will open its doors, handcraft one of their famed cakes just for us, and offer light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres.

A Brief History of Modern Times

Since 1971, Modern Times has survived the collapse of the New Left from which it emerged, the assault of chain bookselling, the death of independent stores throughout the country, gentrification of the Mission, and the competition from online booksellers. We see this as testimony to the commitment of our community to a literate and lively exchange of ideas and ideals. We wouldn't be where we are without support from our ever-expanding community of friends, members, customers, authors, artists, and activists.
