Out of the Cases: Five Decades of Queer San Francisco at GLBT History Museum

The GLBT History Museum
4127 18th St.
San Francisco, CA

"Our Vast Queer Past: Celebrating San Francisco's GLBT History," the main-gallery show at The GLBT History Museum, comes alive in this star-studded open-mic night, with local history-makers recounting their memories of the people, places and events on display in the exhibit cases.

Tamara Ching, Jamison Green, Rudy Lemcke, Phyllis Lyon, Crystal Mason, Danny Nicoletta, Trinity Ordona, Carol Queen, George Raya, Carol Seajay, Lisbet Tellefsen and others who animated local queer life from the 1950s through the 2000s will take part — and everyone who attends is invited to share their own stories.

Here's your chance to both hear and tell the amazing stories behind the objects, photos and documents on exhibit at the museum: Stories of struggle, defeat, ingenuity and triumph; pleasure, hook-ups, love and relationships; trouble-making, culture-making, organizing, coalition-building, protesting, voting and creating social change.

Admission: Free (donations welcomed)

ABOUT THE GLBT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Founded in 1985, the GLBT Historical Society is an archives and research center often referred to as San Francisco's "queer Smithsonian." It houses one of the world's largest collections of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender historical materials.

The archives support the work of authors, journalists, filmmakers, curators, scholars, students and others, who use the collections to deepen our understanding of queer history and culture.

The society opened The GLBT History Museum in January 2011 as the first full-scale, stand-alone museum of its kind in the United States and only the second in the world.

Currently featured are two major exhibitions: "Our Vast Queer Past: Celebrating San Francisco's GLBT History" and "Great Collections of the GLBT Historical Society Archives." The museum regularly offers public programs included docent-led tours, film showings, author talks and panel discussions.
