The Great Peace book launch at Modern TimesA small American city is under siege. A group of starving artists – led by a reclusive, sweatpantswearing billionaire – is determined to overthrow the government by any means necessary. Thursday, May 17th: 7pm An absurdist dark comedy, author Ryan Kittleman describes The Great Peace as "a serious book that doesn't take itself seriously." It tells the story of a group of starving artists led by a reclusive, sweatpants-wearing billionaire determined to overthrow the government. With little hope for peace, a neurotic young gadabout, fresh off a failed suicide attempt, takes it upon himself to save his hometown from ruin. The book explores themes of utopian versus dystopian thought, the role of the individual within collectivist movements, the social impact of deindustrialization and urban decay, and the affect that wealth and class have on the political system. Taking on art, politics, philosophy and class, with unflinching verve and wit, The Great Peace appeals to fans of Tom Robbins and Christopher Moore novels, and Terry Gilliam films. Kittleman and his creative team are producing their own 15-minute animated short film adapted from the first three chapters. Based in San Francisco, Kittleman's firm Colony Pictura, represents filmmakers, artists, musicians, designers and authors. Music junkies might know the author first from his punk band days in New York, or his solo folktinged psych-pop albums recorded under the names The Three Potato 4 and Spent Waves. His hometown of Albany, New York was inspiration for the city featured in The Great Peace. Kittleman is already at work on his next book and plans to continue his new career as an author for many years.
