Catalog Release Party, Safe Sex Bang at CSCFriday January 24, 7 – 10 pm: Catalog Release Party Saturday January 25, 6 – 8 pm: Closing Reception Co-sponsored by Magnet SF Center for Sex and Culture - 1349 Mission Street, San Francisco The Center for Sex and Culture's exhibition, SAFE SEX BANG: The Buzz Bense Collection of Safe Sex Posters, has been up since November. There are only a few weeks left to see this show. And now, CSC's first exhibition catalog (36 pages, 9 X 12 inches, ~50 images of posters and contextualizing materials reproduced in full color) is finally here. It is smart, it's hot and copies are for sale. Two upcoming events in conjunction with the exhibition provide your last chance to view the collection that drew an excited, appreciative crowd of friends, educators and students on our opening night. We sincerely hope you will join us at one or both: Friday January 24th is our Catalog Release Celebration and Buzz Bense's Birthday Party. Catalogs will be for sale and we'll have cake, wine and other treats. The following evening, Saturday January 25th is SAFE SEX BANG's closing reception co-sponsored by Magnet SF. There will be a brief discussion on the exhibition and safe sex poster making with collector Buzz Bense, co-curators Alex Fialho and Dorian Katz, designer Scott Sidorsky, and Director of Magnet Steve Gibson. More on the exhibition: SAFE SEX BANG: The Buzz Bense Collection of Safe Sex Posters spans from 1982 into the 2000s, from San Francisco to New York City stateside and internationally to Australia, Germany, Denmark, and Canada. Buzz Bense has collected and produced safe sex posters aimed at members of the queer community since the mid-1980s. In March 2012, Bense donated his collection to CSC of over 150 unique posters, accumulated primarily during his time as a graphic designer with various safe sex advocacy groups and as founder of the San Francisco safe sex club EROS. Circulated at a moment when the queer community experienced the initial ravages brought on by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, these posters comprise a striking aesthetic collection of graphically innovative design that explicitly visualizes diverse LGBT communities and safe sex activism. ~~~~~ Founded in 1996, the Center for Sex & Culture is a non-profit located in San Francisco's South of Market district whose mission is "to provide judgment-free education, cultural events, a library/media archive, and other resources to audiences across the sexual and gender spectrum." CSC has had a gallery program for two years that exhibits contemporary art as well as art and ephemera from its special collections. CSC Gallery Hours: Monday 11:30 am - 3:30 pm and by appointment. CSC is located at 1349 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94301 for additional information or to schedule an appointment to view the exhibition, please contact sexandculturegallery@gmail.com or visit sexandculture.org
