In this fascinating historical discussion hosted by Faetopia, Esteemed gay historian Joey Cain explores the depths and details of the life of Edward Carpenter, a historic gay writer and one of the earliest known gay rights activists.

Q. Who was Edward Carpenter? And why does he matter?

A. Edward Carpenter is one of the early forefathers of the queer liberation movement. Challenging both capitalism and the values of Western civilization, the gay socialist writer Edward Carpenter had an extraordinary impact on the cultural and political landscape of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

One of the earliest advocates of freedom for the people he termed "Homogenic", Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) set the stage over one hundred years ago for what would become today's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Freedom Movement. At a time when same sex loving men were imprisoned for their desire, he lived openly for nearly 40 years

with his dear "boy", George Merrill. Carpenter's writings and life inspired several generations of homosexual people, including the novelist EM Foster, who wrote his novel Maurice after visiting him. Carpenter's influence on Mattachine Society and Radical Fairies founder Harry Hay directly contributed to the birth of the modern LGBT movement. Even the poet Allen Ginsberg traces his gay poetic lineage back to Walt Whitman through Carpenter.

Edward Carpenter in his own time was widely know as many things: a poet, socialist, critic of "Civilization", mystic, vegetarian, anarchist, nudist, simple life advocate, women's freedom supporter, pagan, prison reformer; in short, a harbinger of the many new worlds of the mind and body that were overthrowing the certainties of the Victorian era and giving birth to the Modern period. Carpenter's work anticipated the sexual revolution of the 1960s and placed him at the epicenter of the literary culture of his day.

Carpenter was a proponent of a "larger" Socialism, one that embraced the liberation of the emotional and spiritual life along with the economic. A man of letters, he published over 20 books, including his collection of poems Towards Democracy, and numerous additional articles. He campaigned through out his life on many issues of social concern, ranging from women's suffrage to the protection of the environment, from sexual emancipation to the formation of trade unions. A unifying spiritual vision underlay all of his life and work.

WHAT IS FAETOPIA?

Faetopia is a pop-up queer arts, ecology, theater and community center. For the week before San Francisco Pride, over 50 artists and collaborators will create a visionary space for the gay community in the long vacant Tower Records, next to Cafe Flore at Market St & Noe St (2286 Market St, to be exact).

During the day, Faetopia will host workshops, meditations, teach-ins and heart circles. At night, the arts reign supreme with theater, burlesque, queer cinema, sexy book releases and, of course, plenty of drag. Find out more at http://www.faetopia.com/
