more details » Indisputable Still Life with John Waters at Transmission Gallery, Oakland October 4, 2013 6-9pm TRANSMISSION GALLERY, a new member of the Oakland Art Murmur, announces their upcoming art exhibit entitled 'Indisputable Still Life'. The exhibit runs through November 16, 2013. All are welcome to attend. Curator Cameron Brian brings together a group of six contemporary artists that have chosen to use the object as subject in their work. The contemporary still life images presented in this exhibition are not the elaborate banquet spread we recognize from the 16th Century Dutch still-life paintings. Instead the viewer is shown a paradoxically symbolic slice of contemporary life, sometimes superficially mundane, ubiquitous and unceremoniously presented, but rich in context. Objects; whether symbols of status, religious importance or common and seemingly superficial, continue to find their way as subjects in art. The artist's ability to choose them, observe and interrupt them, render or place them provides the viewer with more understanding of the ephemerality of life.
