Join us at the opening reception for the second installment of Anthony Holdsworth's Mission District series, a monthlong exhibition of new paintings. Alejandro Murguía, poet laureate of San Francisco and author of This War Called Love, The Medicine of Memory, and Stray Poems, will read excerpts from his work-in-progress, titled Mission Noir.

For the past year, Anthony Holdsworth has been chronicling the Mission District. These paintings represent a fusion of his Californian urban landscapes with his ongoing paintings of Latin America and Italy. His intention has been to channel the unique energy of this community even as it evaporates under the heat of gentrification.

Holdsworth hopes that this exhibition will contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the future of our city. "I am not opposed to a certain level of gentrification, but, in the Mission, the Latino community is losing critical mass. It is reaching a point where it will not have the resources to offer a unique window on the rich and varied cultures of Latin America nor act as an incubator for creative artists who, by choice or by necessity, live on the margins of mainstream society."

To accommodate the number of paintings in the "Mission District" series, this exhibition comprises two shows. Many works will be exchanged, while some key works will be displayed both times. Holdsworth dedicates this exhibition to the memory of his friend and neighbor, the late, great underground cartoonist Spain Rodriguez
