Make-Your-Own Advance Health Care Directive Workshop
Getting hit by a bus. Falling off a ladder. A sudden illness. Shit Happens. Hopefully not anytime soon, but why not make some simple and protective plans in the meantime?
An Advance Health Care Directive (also known as a medical directive, or living will) is like an umbrella – an "in case it rains" tool. It's an umbrella for you. It's also an umbrella for those you love and who love you.
A health crisis is hard – no doubt about it. And, at that point, you want your kin to know what to do. You don't want them to wonder, argue, or guess how to best take care of you. You don't want someone you don't like to swoop in and make all decisions.
Having an umbrella helps protect you and your loved ones from the pain of playing these guessing games in a time of stress by giving them guidance as to your wishes and needs at such a critical moment.
This is Hard Stuff, but so much easier than getting caught in a storm without any umbrella at all. So, lets do it together. With a potluck and cookies! And, lets walk out with a real live fully legal document, your 'umbrella' plan for that rainy day, all taken care of.
Part 1: The Scoop
When: Thursday June 3, 7pm – 9pm (doors open at 6:30pm)
Where: The Naked Lady, a queer home on Golden Gate Avenue at Steiner in San Francisco (address upon registration)
Price: $20 - $30*
Bring: potluck dish for one
In this workshop, we will cover the basics:
• What is an Advance Health Care Directive?
• The decisions you will want to make and the information you will need to gather before the next workshop, and guidance in making those decisions.
• Answers to your questions!
Part 2: The Document
When: Tuesday June 8, 7pm – 10pm (doors open at 6:30pm)
Where: Same place as Part 1
Price: $20 - $30* plus $10 notarization fee
Bring: your homework + potluck dish for one
In this hands-on workshop we will:
• Create your own Advance Health Care Directive and a wallet card
• Notarize the document
• Talk about what to do with the Advance Health Care Directive now that you've got it
• Celebrate that we did it! Umbrella done.
• As desired by the group, we can discuss other rainy-day planning (wills, trusts, power of attorney for finance, etc.)
The workshops will be facilitated by Heba Nimr and Dylan Miles, both lawyers/mediators who support families of all kinds with their legal and conflict resolution needs. They work to create umbrellas for queerdos and others without thousands of dollars or personal attorneys.
Registration: Email castroworkshops@gmail.com by Thursday May 27th to reserve your place in one or both of these workshops. Part 1 is a prerequisite for Part 2. Part 2 will be capped at 15 participants.
* If you want to participate in these workshops but can't afford it, please don't let that keep you away. Email castroworkshops@gmail.com and let us know what you can afford. We will work it out.
