Reminder: workshop: Queer Surviving: Telling our whole stories @ Sun Aug 29 1pm - 4:30pm (Queer Things)

workshop: Queer Surviving: Telling our whole stories

Queer Surviving: Telling our whole stories
Sunday August 29th – 1-4:30
Co- facilitated by Sassafras Lowrey and Jen Cross

$20-40, sliding scale (NOTAFLOF; please be in touch if $ is an issue, and we can work something out!)

Please visit http://www.writingourselveswhole.org to register!

What does it mean to 'survive' as a queer* person? The word 'survivor' can mean many things: sexual assault or abuse, partner violence, family violence, believing that we're worth less because we're queer (internalized homophobia), dealing with homophobia at work, at school, from the police or elsewhere (institutional homophobia), being hospitalized to 'cure' our queerness, forced or chosen houselessness (when 'home' is the least safe space to be) and more.

Sassafras and Jen invite you to spend an afternoon writing about your larger story of survival, which may also be your larger story of 'coming out.' We are, each of us, endlessly creative in the ways that we find to survive and reclaim our power in this society. Bearing witness to our fuller stories, and allowing others to bear witness to us, can be a way to honor the difficult choices we have made, and decrease our sense of being alone or 'crazy.'

Kicked Out queer youth anthology reading at Modern Times

Kicked Out reading,
featuring editor Sassafras Lowrey and contributors Tommi Avicolli Mecca and Booh Eduardo.

In the U.S., 40% of homeless youth identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ). Kicked Out brings together the voices of current and former homeless LGBTQ youth and tells these forgotten stories of some of our nation's most vulnerable citizens. Diverse contributors share stories of survival and abuse with poignant accounts of the sanctuary of community and the power of creating chosen families.

Reminder: Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times @ Sat Aug 28 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)

Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org

http://www.sistahssteppin.org/

On Saturday, August 28, 2010, Sistahs Steppin' in Pride (SSIP) will celebrate its 9th annual East Bay Dyke March & Festival at Lake Merritt and Snow Park in Oakland. For almost a decade, SSIP has produced this landmark event that celebrates and honors the East Bay's diverse queer women's communities while bridging alliances with neighbors and friends from the greater landscape. As we engage the entire community to bring this eve...nt to fruition, we invite you to join us for a day of community, celebration, and fun.

Sistahs, as we define it, includes ALL women who recognize the necessity to come together from a space of Sistahood and Sistahlove.

MISSION STATEMENT Sistahs Steppin' in Pride illuminates the collective and individual creativity, strength, and accomplishments of East Bay lesbian and bisexual women to reaffirm their beauty and sense of belonging.

PURPOSE Sistahs Steppin' In Pride's purpose is to nurture intergenerational and multi-cultural bridges and create a safe, sacred space to honor our Herstory. We seek to empower the diverse East Bay lesbian and bisexual community of women to reclaim their lives from fear and celebrate their spirituality. We aspire to provide opportunities to the artists, activists, community organizations and individuals of our community to come together and share our lives and resources.

Reminder: Stop the Violence Castro Procession @ Fri Aug 27 9pm - 10:30pm (Queer Things)

Stop the Violence Castro Procession

August 27 · 9:00pm - 10:30pm
Location Harvey Milk Station at Castro/Market Streets,
406 Castro Street,
San Francisco, CA.

Join The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence, The Castro Community On Patrol (CCOP), recent hate crime survivor Zachary Davenport, and all concerned members and friends of the GLBT community for a peaceful procession, anti-violence material distribution, and crime scene cleansing to STOP THE VIOLENCE. Help us raise awareness to the tragic increase in hate crimes and reclaim our neighborhood by joining our peaceful procession through... the Castro, down Market to Church Street. Along the way we will educate and arm our community against hate crimes by handing out free anti-violence materials including STOP THE VIOLENCE window placards, whistles, and safety information. Hold vigil with us as we stop along the route at the scenes of three recent hate crimes (440 Castro, Pottery Barn, & Church & Market J-Church line) for a blessing and cleansing to purge the violence and bring safety back to our streets.

Meet the Sisters at Harvey Milk Station (Castro & Market) at 9 PM. Safety materials and whistles will be provided. Show your support and help us STOP THE VIOLENCE.
