Reminder: Bad Blood: Doc on AIDS and Hemophilia at the Roxie @ Mon Jan 31 7pm - 8pm (Queer Things)

Bad Blood: Doc on AIDS and Hemophilia at the Roxie

Bad blood: A cautionary tale
Directed by Marilyn Ness

Monday, January 31 ONLY
Roxie Theater
3117 16th Street

For downloadable images go to http://www.badblooddocumentary.com

The Roxie Theater will host a special community screening of the recently completed documentary film BAD BLOOD: A CAUTIONARY TALE on January 31st at 7PM. Tickets are free but you must RSVP to rsvp@badblooddocumentary.com to obtain tickets.

BAD BLOOD chronicles, through the eyes of survivors and family members, how a "miracle" treatment for hemophilia became an agent of death for 10,000 Americans. Faced with evidence that pharmaceutical companies and government regulators knew the product was contaminated with HIV and hepatitis -- yet sold it anyway -- the hemophilia community launched a powerful and inspiring fight to right the system that failed them and to make it safer for all. Produced and directed by two-time Emmy Award winning filmmaker Marilyn Ness, BAD BLOOD honors the memory of those who were lost by encouraging reform today. BAD BLOOD is a Necessary Films picture, runs for 83 minutes, and is not yet MPAA rated.

This is the third in a series of screenings co-hosted by the Gay Men's Health Crisis and the four national bleeding disorders groups (National Hemophilia Foundation, Hemophilia Federation of American, World Federation of Hemophilia, and Committee of Ten Thousand). The focus of the screening series is to educate the bleeding disorders community and the gay rights community on the current effort to revise blood donor guidelines, as well as needed blood safety and FDA reform.

There will be a post film Q&A with Marilyn Ness, filmmaker; Nathan Schaefer, Director of Public Policy for GMHC, Corey Dubin, President of the Committee of Ten Thousand, and Jan Bult, President of the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (the pharmaceutical industry representative).

About the Director
Marilyn Ness is a two-time Emmy Award-winning documentary producer. She founded Necessary Films in 2005, directing short films for non-profits and developing documentaries including BAD BLOOD and GENOME: The Future Is Now. Prior to that, Ness spent four years as a producer for director Ric Burns, collaborating on four award-winning PBS films: Ansel Adams; The Center of the World; Andy Warhol; and Eugene O'Neill. Ness's other credits include films for TLC, Court TV, and National Geographic, as well as films for the PBS series American Experience and the theatrical feature The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. She lives in New York City with her husband and two sons.

Reminder: Teaching the Taboo: Rick Ayers and William Ayers at Moder... @ Sat Jan 29 7pm - 9pm (Queer Things)

Teaching the Taboo: Rick Ayers and William Ayers at Modern Times

On Saturday, January 29th, Rick Ayers and Bill Ayers will be speaking and signing books at Modern Times bookstore, 888 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, at 7:00 PM.

This is the first book tour appearance for their newly published TEACHING THE TABOO: COURAGE AND IMAGINATION IN THE CLASSROOM, a provocative and highly acclaimed collection of essays by these two activists who have dedicated their lives to teaching and the struggle to improve education for all children. In this volume, the Ayers brothers share classroom stories and struggles – they invite readers to question the basic assumptions and unexamined truths they hold about the purposes, aims, and potential of schooling, young children, and the profession of teaching. They argue that education should not be about tests, competition, and supporting the status quo but of opening doors, expanding minds, and handing power over to students as they engage in the world.

In the foreword, Haki Madhubuti, the renowned poet, essayist, and civil rights activist, writes, "If given the chance, this book can be a defining text not only for those in the profession of education, but also for parents and lay readers nationwide who are truly concerned about our children and our future."

Advance Praise for Teaching the Taboo
"Drawing from a lifetime of deep thinking about education and courageous commitment to precious students, Rick and William Ayers have given us a marvelous book. Their devastating critique of the pervasive market models in education and their powerful defense of democratic forms of imagination in schools are so badly needed in our present-day crisis!" — Cornel West, Princeton University

"Teaching the Taboo is provocative, challenging, funny in places, wild but sensible enough to be useful, inspiring, and practical for educators who are working to negate the educational madness that is infecting the schools." — Herb Kohl, author of 36 Children and Painting Chinese.

Rick Ayers is an adjunct professor in Teacher Education at University of San Francisco and Mills College and founder of the Communication Arts and Sciences small school at Berkeley High School. He is a regular education blog writer for Huffington Post.

William Ayers is a school reform activist, distinguished professor, and senior university scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education, the cultural contexts of schooling, and teaching as an essentially intellectual, ethical, and political enterprise. He is currently the vice-president of the curriculum division of the American Educational Research Association.

Reminder: Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times @ Sat Jan 29 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)

Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org
