Reminder: Ella Effect at Vima Ballroom @ Fri May 31, 2013 8pm - 9pm (Queer Things)

Ella Effect at Vima Ballroom

"Ella Effect" is the story behind Ella Fitzgerald's genius. After a sold out premiere at Shotwell Studio last fall, "Ella Effect" returns to Vima Ballroom May 31 and June 1, 2013.

"This ain't your mama's tribute to Ella show; this is an incisive look at the ways she created herself and her style through beautiful renditions of the songs that Ella made her own. Josh and Freeplay (Dance Crew) take these lessons and amaze you with how truly timeless this work can be. Matching movement and music, dance and daring, you have a spectacular evening in store. "

- Pam Peniston, Executive Director, National Queer Arts Festival

Description: A one-hour show featuring extraordinary jazz singers and musicians, energetic swing and hip hop dancers, and honest, riveting narrative. "The Ella Effect" is the story not just of how Ella became a genius, but how her method of personal evolution can apply to anyone, anywhere. In 12 time honored classic Ella standards, Josh Klipp and his talented cast not only entertain, but illustrate and bring to life Ella's simple and brilliant approach to creating genius…and perhaps even profound change.

Featuring: Josh Klipp and the Klipptones, jazz vocalist Emily Day, dancers Janey Madamba, Rachel Baker, Freeplay Dance Crew and more!

When: Friday May 31 and Saturday June 1, 7:30pm seating, 8pm show.

Where: Vima Ballroom and Dance Studio
820 26th Street (at 3rd, 1 block from the T Line)

Tickets: $15 online/ $20 at the door. Online tickets available at Eventbrite.com. Reserved seating will be available, as well as swing-era and speakeasy inspired pre-show refreshments.

The Cast of "Ella Effect"

Joshua Klipp is a San Francisco-based jazz singer, choreographer, writer and event producer. He and his band, The Klipptones, play their unique brand of swinging standards all over the Bay Area including the Fillmore Jazz Festival, Union Square's "Jewels in the Square", Savanna Jazz, the Condor Club, and more. You can see them every Friday in June and July from 7-11pm at San Francisco's historic Palace Hotel.

Joshua Klipp also founded and is the Creative Director of Freeplay Dance Crew, a hip-hop fusion dance company established in 2000. In April 2013, Freeplay sold out three consecutive performances of its evening length production, "Re/Genesis", a show that plumbed depths of human spirituality and connection. Freeplay Dance Crew has also performed all over the Bay Area including San Francisco Pride, Central Market Arts Festival, Dance Out Diabetes, the National Queer Arts Festival, Fresh Meat, Dance for Another Day and more, as well as numerous fundraising efforts for community and arts-focused organizations.

Jazz vocalist Emily Day received her BFA in Vocal Jazz Performance from the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program in New York City in 2005, and her MA in Popular Music Studies from the University of Liverpool in 2010. She has worked for several years as a lecturer, private instructor, and adjunct at the University of Vermont, St. Michael's College, Johnson State College, and the Community College of Vermont. She has provided music direction and vocal coaching for public schools, performing arts camps, and community theatre productions. Ms. Day performs around the Bay Area with local legends such as Ken Husbands and ChristianTamburr.

Janey Madamba, Ella Effect dancer and Narrator. From 2007-2012, Ms. Madamba was the artistic director of Funk4soul a hip hop fusion dance company. From 2003-2008 she danced with Freeplay Dance Crew, and in 2007-2008 she directed the crew, an SF based nonprofit dance company. In addition, she has danced with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, in Paco Gomes' workshops, the San Francisco Hip Hop Dancefest, Women on the Way Festival, SF Pride, The Garage, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Dance for Another Day Festival. She has taught hip hop and dance classes at the YMCA, New Style Motherlode, Shoebox Dance Studio and the El Cerrito Community Center. She currently serves on the advisory board for the West Wave Dance festival.

Rachel Baker is a riveting performer specializing in acro-yoga, swing dance, caberet/burlesque and American Sign Language. She teaches and performs regularly at Emeryville's popular Athletic Playground.

Reminder: Mugsy pop-up wine bar at El Rio @ Fri May 31, 2013 5:30pm - 8:30pm (Queer Things)

Mugsy pop-up wine bar at El Rio

May 31, 2013 – Mugsy pop-up wine bar at El Rio (5:30-8:30) on the back patio.

Wine term of the week: "Shep Naches" it's Yiddish for deriving pleasure from someone else's success. Which we do -- from Bayview's own Gratta Wines, a double gold recipient out of 3,500+ entries at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition.

Oh, we're also saying "I told you so."

Why? Because we said it was good and now Gratta's 2010 Sonoma Cabernet is one of only TWO Cabernets in that competition to receive double gold – no small shakes for wine from a tricked out garage.

Fine, fine, wait to hear from the international judges. But there's not much of that Cabernet and you can enjoy it at Mugsy's.

We're gearing up for a Mugsy reunion with more highbrow wine drinking on the patio of San Francisco's favorite dive bar venue (google it if you don't trust me)... And Barbara Gratta will be there in a tiara with a limited amount of her fancy Cabernet plus new and delicious offerings available in a tasting flight or by the glass.

We'll also serve some bubbly. Because bubbles give me naches. A sparkling wine, Comte de Bailly Rosé made by the French with grapes from the Spanish: let's call it Frenchie La 'spana, and local Rock Wall Wine's winning Blanc de Blancs and perhaps a bit of White or Rosé Betelgiuse from Brown Estate.

Sound good? I thought so. All you have to do is show up at El Rio on Friday, May 31 between 5:30-8:30 at the back patio of El Rio. We're working on the food, but think Salumi and it may come true.

Mugsy focuses on women, urban and people of color winemakers as well as all around enjoyment of wine. Glasses $7-8 and we're thinking once a month.

Age: 21 and over

"San Francisco favorite, El Rio is generously donating all Bar Proceeds to the GLBT National Help Center on May 31st from 4 pm - 6 pm. Come down and join us for a fun night of shmoozing and good times. Tell a friend, bring a buddy!

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) National Help Center provides vital peer-support, community connections, and resource information to GLBT people, and those questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. We provide services via our toll-free hotlines, email and online one-to-one chat.

We are the oldest and most comprehensive national organization of its type and scope in the United States, providing this critically needed service regardless of age or geographic location.
