Book launch: The Boy Who Was Not A Lesbian And Other True Stories at SF LGBT Center

Explore Gender Identity through Compelling Personal Stories.
Eleven men and women from around the world share their poignant experiences relating to their gender identity and expression of self.

In 2007, photojournalist Kristin Lyseggen started a project in Norway which would last 5 years. Her goal; to advance awareness and expand understanding of people who do not identify as the gender they were assigned at birth. The culmination of her work is now available in her book "The Boy Who Was Not a Lesbian And Other True Stories". The accounts contained within provide a rare opportunity to experience the struggle of self while navigating a world of rigid societal structures, one that is often inherently dangerous to these outliers desperately realizing their dream of identity.

Once thought of as rare, new research finds that 1 in 200 people identify as transgender or gender variant. Not only does this book provide insight into the daily challenges that are met and surmounted in the lives of the individuals portrayed within, this book is also a powerful addition to the current global conversation regarding transgender and gender non-conforming civil rights.

"Striking and revealing; a testament to the courage and beauty of the human quest for selfhood"
- Jamison Green, author of Becoming a Visible Man, San Francisco

"Powerful and moving; ordinary people with exceptional lives - an absorbing and revelatory book"
- Dewi Lewis, Publisher, Stockport, UK

Covering subjects ranging from the Bedouins of the Negev Desert to religious sects in England's West Midlands, photojournalist Kristin Lyseggen's work highlights individuals within communities in the process of defining who and what they are. She has exhibited her work in Bangkok, Birmimgham, Oslo, and London. Her photo documentaries have taken her to Morocco, Palestine, Israel, Thailand, and Cuba, as well as all corners of Europe. Kristin is based in Berkeley, California and Oslo, Norway.
