Reminder: Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times @ Sat Oct 30 5:30pm - 7pm (Queer Things)

Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. In addition, we often hold smaller meetings throughout the week to plan specific actions and activities. http://www.gayshamesf.org

Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookstore with 10 locations in California. Books Inc.'s origins date back to the Gold Rush days of 1851, when Anton Roman struck it rich in Shasta City, California and set himself up in business selling books. That small bookstore was moved, bought, sold, burned, rebuilt and renamed, and became Books Inc. as we know it today in 1946.

Today, with 10 stores and 200 employees, Books Inc. serves as a shining example that independent bookselling can survive and prosper, even if we must dance among the elephants.

Zombie Uprising and Prom in the Mission

ZOM PROM

ZOMBIE UPRISING
FRIDAY OCTOBER 29TH, 8PM@ 16TH & MISSION
ENDS at EL RIO (3158 Mission St)
FILTHY MUSIC, UNDEAD DANCING
Featuring queer DJs and musicians: Elle Niño, Club Crasherz, Hold Me Luke Allen, local DJs TV Wonder and DJ Contrary
...
We have recently caught wind of a rumor that Zombies all across the Bay Area are planning a massive revolt that will take place on the Night of October 29th.

Rumor has it that the Zombies will be meeting at 16th and Mission at 8:00pm for a procession, that may or may not involve evil music and undead dancing. The Zombies plan to march to El Rio (3158 Mission St), where they will hold some sort of prom. They will likely do revolting things related to the consumption of flesh and breed and make other Zombies.

Don't believe us? See the flyer we mysteriously found last night. We fear that due to the escalating marginalization of Zombies, and the particularly devastating effects this economic crisis has had on the Undead Community, a revolt is imminent.

PLATONIC KISSES! ROMANTIC KISSES! FAMILIAL KISSES! PECKS ON THE CHEEK! AIR KISSES! FRENCH KISSES! HERSHEYS KISSES! ALL KISSES!

Marie Claire chose to publish an essay in which the author shares her utter disgust for fat people - but moreover - physical displays of affection between said fat people.

That being said, I WANT YOU to join TOMORROW, FRIDAY OCTOBER 29, 2010 at 6:00pm outside of Marie Claire at the Hearst Building to make the statement that LOVE HAS NO WEIGHT LIMIT!

ALL SHAPES AND SIZES! EVERYONE IS INVITED!

Reminder: Ryan McGinley show opening at Ratio 3 @ Fri Oct 29 6pm - 8pm (Queer Things)

Ryan McGinley show opening at Ratio 3

Ryan McGinley: Life Adjustment Center
October 29 – December 11, 2010
Ratio 3, 1447 Stevenson Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA

Opening reception: October 29, 2010, 6-8pm.

Ratio 3 is pleased to present Life Adjustment Center, new work by Ryan McGinley, on view from October 29th to December 11, 2010.

For his second solo exhibition at Ratio 3, Ryan McGinley will exhibit two new distinct bodies of work.

The first is a series of new black-and-white portraits. Shot in McGinley's New York studio using simple lighting and a plain backdrop, McGinley's images capture incredibly intimate and seductive moments between the subject and the photographer. The pictures appear almost timeless, harking back to the history of classic photographic portraiture throughout the previous decades. In a large number of these works, McGinley adds a sense of improbability by posing the nude models with live animals, adding a further twist to what seems to be a complex depiction between the real and the imagined.

The second body of work on view continues McGinley's ever expanding oeuvre of road trip images. McGinley carefully orchestrates the scene, yet the results are entirely unpredictable. At times gritty and mysterious, these new pictures portray inconceivable actions awash with natural and sometimes implausible colors. The cinematic outside settings, the suspended human forms, and McGinley's acute eye for the sublime all add up to a fervent visceral experience.

With the works in this exhibition, McGinley has yet again captured the exuberance, optimism, and power of youth.

A 44 page monograph published by Dashwood Books will accompany the exhibition.

Ryan McGinley was born in 1977 in Ramsey, New Jersey. He has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Spain, and the Kunsthalle, Vienna. Recent solo gallery exhibitions include Team Gallery, New York, Alison Jacques Gallery, London, and The Breeder, Athens, Greece. McGinley's work is included in numerous museum collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. McGinley currently lives and works in New York, NY.
