Gay Shame Meetings at Modern Times

GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving
"values" of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance. GAY SHAME is a celebration of resistance: all are welcome. GAY SHAME meets every Saturday in the Tede Mathews Reading Room of Modern Times Bookstore @ 888 Valencia btw 19th + 20th. Meeting time is 5:30PM, which means that people begin to arrive at 5:30PM and we start the meeting no later than 5:45PM. Reminder: Altnorthern - Canadian queer artists at The Lab @ Sat Feb 27 1pm - 6pm (Queer Things)

Altnorthern - Canadian queer artists at The Lab

The current group exhibition at The Lab, "Alternorthern," features the work
of nine emerging Canadian artists who explore various themes around national
and global identities. Among these is queer Canadian artist Vincent
Chevalier, whose interdisciplinary work focuses on themes of disclosure,
agency, labor, and identity. Central to his work are his own identity as a
queer, HIV positive person and how that in part structures his daily
existence.

Also featured in "Alternorthern" is Zoë Yuristy, a queer Canadian artist
whose work engages with the cultural production of images as a means of
exploring identity. For example, Northern Afghanistan Fantasy Play-set
(2009) consists of a series of small figurines of army men (approximately
500 sculptures) posed in sexual positions and spray-painted bright pink.

"Alternorthern" runs through Saturday, March 6. Gallery hours: Wednesday -
Saturday, 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.
The Lab, 2948 Sixteenth Street, San Francisco, CA 94103.
http://www.thelab.org

Vincent Chevalier and Zoë Yuristy in "Alternorthern"

Vincent Chevalier ( http://www.vincentchevalier.ca/ ) is an interdisciplinary
artist performing work around themes of disclosure, agency, labor, and
identity. Chevalier uses video, performance, and installation to reveal
hidden relationships of power between the body as subject and structures
that dictate our everyday action. These actions range from the quotidian to
the theatrical; they bring the personal to the public, and push the latent
into view.

Some of Chevalier's past actions include: walking on a piece of red carpet
continuously for a whole week; giving public lectures about his drug addiction while serving beer; dressing up as Lisa Loeb and lip-syncing her debut album in a single video take; sanding pieces of plywood into dust; and, as part of an ongoing and relentless process, telling people that he is queer and HIV-positive.

This disclosure informs Chevalier's aesthetic and methodological approaches.
The artist considers the act to be a formal gesture around which his
practice can be organized. Recently, Chevalier has been examining disclosure
as an intersubjective process that produces physical, emotional, and social
effects. He writes: "This holds personal as well as political significance.
As an individual claiming a queer/fag and HIV-positive subject position,
disclosing plays a significant role in structuring my everyday. My art
practice attempts to insert this gesture into the everyday as an
intervention."

This exhibition showcases three separate works by Chevalier: So... when did
you figure out that you had AIDS?, Full Disclosure: I have gingivitis, and
Roundabout.

So... when did you figure out that you had AIDS? consists of home video
footage recorded when Chevalier was 13 years old in which the artist plays
the role of "a man dying from AIDS." The video predates Chevalier's HIV
diagnosis and performance career. Chevalier presents the performance as a
foundational work within his art and identity histories highlighting themes
of performativity and representation.

Zoë Yuristy's (http://zoeyuristy.wordpress.com/) photography based work
engages with the cultural production of images as a means of exploring
identity. In doing so, Yuristy's work moves seamlessly through art
historical conceptualism, pop cultural references, historical narratives,
and personal confessions. Through juxtaposing sincere gestures and ironic
distanciation, the artist is able to create a space where the real and the
fantastical can co-exist. Yuristy is often concerned with subversively
appropriating references to pop culture, the historical, and art historical
narratives. For the artist, image-making is a multi-faceted process by which
narratives about culture become sites for artistic production. In this way,
Yuristy's approach to imagemaking is as unique to each work as the diversity
of themes the artist addresses.

"Alternorthern" includes three works by Zoë Yuristy: Northern Afghanistan
Fantasy Playset, After William Notman Series, and Lost Boy and 5225 Figueroa Mountain Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441 (Neverland Ranch).

Northern Afghanistan Fantasy Play-set (2009) consists of a series of small
figurines of army men (approximately 500 sculptures) posed in sexual
positions and spray-painted bright pink that are available for purchase by
gallery visitors.

In this work, Yuristy uses humor to critically deconstruct heterosexist
constructions of masculinity. In place of repressive structures and violent
landscapes, she has created a queer utopia where army figurines can be used
to imaginatively promote "love and peace," rather than hatred and violence.

Lost Boy and 5225 Figueroa Mountain Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441 (Neverland
Ranch) (2008) is a photographic diptych conceived as a meditation on the
contemporary anxieties we feel about images of children as well as a
questioning of whether it is possible to produce images of children in this
context. In Lost Boy, the artist occupies the role of the children's fiction
character Peter Pan, a boy caught in a state of eternal youth. The figure,
whose posture indicates his assurance and defiance, gazes defiantly out at
the viewer. The character's body is read off against text from the play that
speaks to the haptic nature of the photographic image. "No one must ever
touch me," Peter declares. As the viewer's desire to touch - the image, the
object/subject - is made palpable, it is revealed as problematic. The
accompanying image, Neverland Ranch, contributes to the anxiety that is
brought upon by looking. The image is constructed out of satellite
photographs taken from the area in and around Michael Jackson's Neverland
Ranch, the children's theme park where Jackson was alleged to have sexually
assaulted young boys. The awesome beauty of this landscape seduces the
viewer while it's real-world context keeps them at a distance.

The Lab, a project of The art re grüp, Inc., is supported in part by the
William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia
Foundation; San Francisco Publicity and Advertising Fund's Hotel Tax/Grants
for the Arts program; The San Francisco Foundation; The San Francisco Arts
Commission¹s Cultural Equity Grants Program; Zellerbach Family Fund; and
members and volunteers of The Lab.

Reminder: Trans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing Class @ Sat Feb 27 10am - 12pm (Queer Things)

Trans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing Class

Trans & Queer + Community Voice & Singing Class
Saturdays 10 am - 12 pm
February 6th to March 27th
848 Community Space
848 Divisadero St @ McAllister St, San Francisco

Fee is sliding scale $80 - $160 for the 8 week session.
Please come to the first class for $10-$20 to try it out and decide if you'd like to join us!

If you're really interested in this class and the fee makes it inaccessible to you, please contact us at voiceandglitter@gmail.com to inquire about a possible payment plan or scholarship.

Course description:

This is a community class intended for self-identified queer, transgender, bisexual, two-spirit, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, gay, and lesbian people* who want to develop a fuller range of their voice for speaking and/or singing. People with all levels of vocal experience (or lack thereof) are welcome and encouraged to join us! The class will culminate in an optional performance of texts and songs. Glitter will also be optional but highly encouraged.

In this class, Wendy Vastine will primarily combine two physical vocal techniques - the Linklater technique and the Roy Hart/Alfred Wolfsohn approach – and Eli Conley will provide basis in more classical and traditional singing techniques.

The Linklater technique of 'Freeing the Natural Voice,' involves learning to relax most of the body's muscles while activating others intentionally. Linklater holds that through socialization and the trials of everyday life, our muscles have learned to hold tension that blocks an easy, full voice. The technique works with activating and learning how to use the full body.

The Roy Hart/Alfred Wolfsohn approach to voice is grounded in the idea that anybody can sing, but everyone has a different path into their voice. It is an extremely individual approach, so there is no one lesson that is the same. It also involves training the body to relax, and to access the voice from different parts of the body.

Eli's singing technique draws from his classical, jazz and folk singing background. We will focus on bringing out the joy in singing no matter what your experience (or fears), learning how to find your core sound, singing in tune with confidence throughout your voice's whole range.

*We are creating this space intentionally for lgbtq communities because we know that lgbtq folks like ourselves all too often find learning & creative spaces lacking relevance to our lives and awareness of our needs. If you have any questions about whether the class is right for you, please don't hesitate to contact us at voiceandglitter@gmail.com

Teacher Bios:

Eli Conley is a white gay transgender man who grew up singing in the renowned Greater Richmond Children's Choir in central Virginia. He has trained in jazz singing at Berklee College of Music in Boston and classical vocal performance at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. Currently, Eli sings tenor with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and performs as an indie folk singer/songwriter ( myspace.com/eliconley ). He has a special interest in working with students through the vocal changes brought on by testosterone. Eli also teaches private voice lessons from his home in Oakland -- call 510-559-0301 for more info.

Wendy Vastine is a queer femme who became fascinated with the voice as a transformative vehicle, as part of her physical theater training at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theatre Wing. Since moving to San Francisco, she has performed with We Players' site specific performances of Shakespeares's, The Tempest, and Macbeth. She has also written and performed many shorter, solo socio-political comedic pieces. These days Wendy is most often found using her voice training to create different sounds on her clarinet with the Brass Liberation Orchestra. She is particularly interested in using the arts as a tool for healing and sustainability in community activism.

Reminder: Oedipus el Rey at Magic Theater @ Fri Feb 26 8pm - 9pm (Queer Things)

Oedipus el Rey at Magic Theater

Oedipus el Rey
A reimagined classic by Luis Alfaro
January 28 - February 28.

Do you believe in destiny? With his unique Chicano swagger and sly sense of humor, Luis Alfaro transforms Sophocles' ancient tale into an electrifying and unforgettable myth for the modern age. As Oedipus struggles against fate amidst a chorus of prison inmates, his epic journey takes him down California's dusty Highway 99 from the Golden Gate Bridge to the City of Angels.

Oedipus el Rey is a National New Play Network World Premiere.

February 26 - Queer Open Mic with Michael Montlack

In February, it sucks to be queer. Did you ever notice that? Way too many "boy" and "girl" cupids kissing on cards that tell your sweetheart that you'll love them forever. Hallmark doesn't have a M4M section in its mile-long row of pink heart-bedazzled schwag. Bridal shows don't have suggestions on how two brides can coordinate their dresses without breaking the "don't see the dress until the wedding" rule….

Well, bah on all of them, we say! Make this month the queerest you can. Dress yourself up as cupid, and hand out your email address to cute young things down in SoMa. Take your lover out dancing and recreate that magical first meeting - you know, the one where you were so nervous that you almost threw up on your shoes? Rail at the universe and believe in love, even if for just one night. And if you're so motivated, bring your leftover angst, schadenfreude, and any other psychological fugue down to QOM so we can help you get it out. It's cathartic, you know.

This month, we're so thrilled to have Michael Montlack at the mic!

About Michael Montlack:

Michael Montlack is the editor of the essay anthology My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them (University of Wisconsin Press, 2009) and the author of three poetry chapbooks: Cover Charge (Winner of the 2007 Gertrude Prize); Girls, Girls, Girls (Pudding House, 2008); and The Slip (Poets Wear Prada, 2009). His work has appeared in Cimarron Review, Swink, New York Quarterly, Poet Lore, Court Green, Columbia Poetry Review, MiPOesias and other journals. Recently he was awarded residencies from Ucross (Wyoming), Soul Mountain Retreat (Connecticut), VCCA (Virginia) and Lambda Literary Retreat (California).
