Documentary filmmaker, Jenni Olson, and writer, Stephen Elliott, will present their work and partake in a conversation on how artists in different genres create work that documents--and is rooted in--lived experience. "Representing Reality" is part of Saturday Night @ CIIS, a free guest artist series sponsored by the department of Writing, Consciousness & Creative Inquiry, and will be facilitated by faculty member and writer, Sarah Stone.

Stephen Elliott is the editor of The Rumpus.net. He is the author of seven books including his forthcoming true-crime memoir, The Adderall Diaries. His novel Happy Baby was a finalist for the New York Public Library's Young Lion Award as well as a best book of 2004 in Salon.com, Newsday, Chicago New City, and the Village Voice. In 2004 he wrote Looking Forward To It, about the quest for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Elliott's writing has been featured in Esquire, The New York Times, GQ, Best American Non-Required Reading 2005 and 2007, Best American Erotica, and Best Sex Writing 2006. He is also the founder of The Progressive Reading Series and he blogs at The Huffington Post.

Jenni Olson is one of the world's leading experts on LGBT cinema history, and the director of e-commerce at WolfeVideo.com. Her debut feature film, The Joy of Life, world premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and went on to play a pivotal role in renewing debate about the need for a suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge. Author of The Queer Movie Poster Book (2005, Chronicle Books), Jenni was also one of the founders of PlanetOut.com where she established the massive queer film industry resource, PopcornQ. She continues to write about queer films, as well as curating, collecting, and creating them.
