It Gets Better with Dan Savage at SF State

IT GETS BETTER, WITH DAN SAVAGE

The SFSU Bookstore Is Out and Proud to Bring Dan Savage to SF State

Noon on March 25th, 2011 at Jack Adams Hall, SFSU

In March 2011, Dutton is releasing It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living, ed. by Dan Savage and Terry Miller. The book is inspired by the phenomenally popular It Gets Better Project on YouTube, a series of inspirational stories from celebrities and non-celebrities about surviving bullying and moving on to build happy and successful lives.

When author and columnist Dan Savage learned of a fifteen-year-old boy who committed suicide after being bullied by classmates who believed he was gay, he and his husband, Terry Miller, determined to reach out to troubled LGBT youth across the country. On September 22, 2010, they uploaded a video to YouTube, where they spoke openly about the bullying they received as teenagers—and how they both went on to lead rewarding adult lives filled with joy, family and love.

Since then, more than 3,000 videos have been posted with over 15 million views in the first month alone. The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, The Huffington Post and NPR have all given the Project coverage. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have posted videos; as have celebrities like Tim Gunn, Michael Kors, Ellen DeGeneres, and Neil Patrick Harris, among many others. Videos can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/itgetsbetterproject .

The book It Gets Better will include expanded essays and new material from celebrities and everyday people. It Gets Better provides honest and heartfelt support that many LGBT youths lack in their lives, offering another medium for this much-needed message.

This event is co-sponsored by AS Performing Arts, AS Program Services, Pride @ SF State, SFSU Prevention Programs' The SAFE Place and CEASE.

This is the only Northern California appearance for this tour.
