"Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does." —Allen Ginsberg

On May 27, San Francisco Zen Center and RADAR Productions will present The Private World Public, a multi-media event that asks Bay Area authors, visual artists, actors and curators to explore a Buddhist concept and create a new piece of work that will be showcased to a live audience at the San Francisco Zen Center. The event will feature readings and performances by Rhodessa Jones, Philip Huang, Bucky Sinister and Ali Liebegott with Oddball Films who will present a feature short film, "Dream of the Wild Horses" ("Le Songe des Chevaux Sauvages," France, 1960, color, 9 minutes, 16mm). The Buddhist parable of the fourth horse serves as the inspiration for the event.

Curated by celebrated San Francisco author and RADAR founder Michelle Tea and taking inspiration from American poet and Buddhist Allen Ginsberg, The Private World Public aims to inspire artists to use Buddhist thought as a thruway to private worlds, bringing forth musings, experiences, fears and wishes to a public audience hungry for first-person tales from the front lines of reality. Tea, a San Francisco Zen Center member and regular attendee at Zen Center programs, engages with the hand-selected group of artists to discuss the parable of the fourth horse. She provides topical literature from Zen Center instructors and breaks down themes and lessons in the readings to inspire and provoke the emergence of new works.
