Our monthly open mic night, Smack Dab, is all ages, all genders, all the time, and free.

Kirk Read is the author of "How I Learned to Snap" and several unpublished books. He has toured with Sister Spit and twice with the Sex Workers Art Show. He founded Army of Lovers and has produced over 100 evenings of arts programming with public health themes, including "The Biggest Quake" and the male sex worker shows "Formerly Known As." He and Tara Jepsen hosted the queer open mic "Kvetsh" and he and Larry-bob Roberts founded and cohosted "Smack Dab" for ten years. He is becoming a nurse to take care of all you sickass brokeass freaks. He and Larry-bob founded Smack Dab to counteract the rampant gentrification in the Castro by providing free space for people to do whatever they wanted. He totally appreciates Magnet's support over the years.

Larry-bob Roberts has been described as "The Stephen Colbert of queer culture." Since 1989 he has published in print and now online the zine, Holy Titclamps. His book, The International Homosexual Conspiracy, published by Manic D. Press, contains 88 short essays on a range of topics. He maintains the local events website Queer Things To Do in San Francisco at SFQUEER.COM.
Along with Kirk Read, he has co-hosted the monthly spoken word series Smack Dab at Magnet in the Castro since November 2003.

If you'd like to perform at the open mic, please come beginning at 7:30pm and bring five minutes of whatever you want to share. Musicians: one song. Prose writers: that's about two and a half double spaced pages of prose. We're the friendliest open mic you'll find but we pay attention to time.
