We got a great set of features for you, keeping it real and lyrical and amazing with MK Chavez and the legendary Blackberri, we cannot wait! Remember to show up on time if you want to be on the mic. 7pm is when the sign up list goes up, the show should start at 7:30pm, and remember it is FREE! With a suggested donation. List fills up fast so get there on time. But never fear, there is always an if we have time list. Signing up gets you 5 minutes to do 1 piece, and 1 piece only, we will stop you if you go over time. REMINDER: We sometimes are flexible with this rule, but if you sign up for the open mic, that means that you are signing up to be a part of the show, that means you stay for the whole thing. BRING: Your open hearts, your bravery, you vulnerability, friendship, listening, and have fun with us. OH yeah, and your poems, your songs, your jokes, your short stories (we will cut you off if you go over time.) and or interpretive dance. NOW MORE ON OUR FEATURES MK CHAVEZ MK Chavez s the author of Virgin Eyes (Zeitgeist Press) Visitation, Next Exit #9 with John Sweet and Pinnacle (Kendra Steiner Editions) Recent and upcoming work can be found in Squaw Valley Review, Generations, 1611, and Zone 3. She has been a fellow at Squaw Valley Writers Conference, and Antioch Writers Workshop. She recently was one of the headliners for the first ever ¿Dónde Esta Mi Gente? Festival of Latino Poetry and Spoken Word. She has been the editor of Mill’s College Award winning journal The Walrus (2010) Cherry Bleeds Literary Journal and the Milvia Street Journal. She is co-founder and co curator of the Berkeley based monthly reading series Lyrics & Dirges, co- founder and editor at Tres Corazons Press and co-organizer of the annual Berkeley Poetry Festival. MUSICAL GUEST BLACKBERRI Blackberri is a Songstylist/Songmaker, poet,writer, photographer, health educator and community advocate. Born in 1945 in Buffalo,NY. Blackberri grew up in Baltimore. He’s written and performed for films including Word is Out, and Looking for Langston, as well as recording the soundtrack for the Haight-Ashbury Radio Collective’s History of SF “Knowing at the Gateway of Gold” which aired on KPFA. This pioneer appeared on the first anthology on Men’s Music “Wall to Roses:songs of changing men, and Gay Men’s Music Strong Love song of gay liberation 1972-1981. His first album Blackberri and Friends “Finally”came out in ’81 and featured his classic”Eat the Rich”. Blackberri has performed music and acted in Marlon Rigg’s film Tongues Untied as well as No Regrets,Anthem, Affirmations, and Black is Black ain’t. He has tour Internationally and has made many radio and TV appearances. This has has made him one of the most visible black queer artist in the country and now lives in Oakland.
