Gay and Bisexual Elders Read their Published Memoirs at Harvey Milk Library

60+ and pens on fire! Gay and Bisexual Elders Read their Published Memoirs

San Francisco, California—On November 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the Harvey Milk Library, David Young Allen, Nicky Frausto, Larry "Goombah" Kelleher and Ray Rudolph from Openhouse, San Francisco's LGBT retirement community, will read personal narratives recently published in a collection of prose called (in)Visible memoir.

This volume of the work is titled With Us, For Them, named after text found in one of Ray Rudolph's pieces recalling the AIDS epidemic in 1980's San Francisco. With current media spotlight on equal marriage rights, don't ask don't tell reform, and teen suicides, LGBT generations are bridged through the personal narrative of Openhouse elders. "They've lived a thousand lives," memoir workshop instructor Rose Tully explains about the writers. "Dirty mags, guns, bedside marriages, and servers in drag. It's intimate, personal, LGBT history."

Openhouse is an organization with a unique mission to connect with Bay Area LGBT seniors, and has collaborated with non-profit publisher Memoir Journal's new program, The (in)Visible Memoir Project to produce this important collection of memoir stories. Author Nicky Frausto says, "The memoir workshops have made me realize I am happy to continue in my journey, sharing my stories and inspiring others to share also. We are never alone in our life experiences."

"(In)Visible Memoir was a meaningful and real way for these gentleman to share their very diverse stories," says Openhouse Operations Manager Michele Horn Davis. "We are proud of our involvement with this project and our partnership with Memoir Journal."

Memoir Journal is a non-profit organization that publishes the literary journal Memoir (and), and periodical series (in)Visible Memoir. The organization is currently expanding outreach efforts through the programmatic development of The (in)Visible Memoir Project, a memoir writing workshop, which generates content for the publication series. Memoir Journal's mission is to encourage the perception that the landscape of memoir writing is changing—in form and expression—and that through publishing the finest of personal narratives, this organization is helping to build a collective sense of community through the art of storytelling.

The With Us, For Them reading is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Library Branch at 415-355-5616.
